Publisher Take IT Studio! and developer 3R Games have announced the Meta Quest launch of Cave Crave. Cave Crave is a VR underground exploration game in which you will explore the belly of the beast. According to the developers, Cave Crave is the most authentic and realistic cave exploration experience in VR. The game combines physical climbing, crawling, and its unique tight-space traversal mechanics by offering an unparalleled journey into the underground. Since its Meta Quest release, it has managed to climb into the top 50 top-selling titles on the VR platform.
Check out the new trailer for Cave Crave below, which also reveals what is coming next to the game:
Cave Crave comes from the developers behind Thief Simulator VR: Greenview Street. Their latest title takes a deviation from stealing antiques and focuses on crawling through claustrophobic underground cave systems in VR. The game offers three different game modes at launch, including a Story Mode, Tourist Mode, and a Horror Mode. The Story Mode offers a story-driven expedition with its first chapter now live and future chapters currently in development. The Tourist Mode removes all the constraints and gives you the freedom to explore already visited caves without any sort of danger or pressure.
The final game mode, Horror Mode, is an optional standalone mode that plunges you into mysterious depths, and you must face the unknown, where you only have your tools for protection. The developer is hinting at additional content to arrive in the game in future updates, which will add not just story campaign chapters but also side content for you to experience the game in different ways.
The gameplay mechanics will see you doing everything that you need to do while you are exploring underground caves. The cave system featured in Cave Crave is a hand-crafted, natural cave layout that will require spatial awareness and orientation for progression. You will explore detailed rock formations, interact with physics-based objects, and navigate terrain shaped by nature. You will feel the cave living and breathing around you. There are no in-game maps that would aid you in progression, so you will need to use chalk markings to create your own trial and avoid getting lost in the deep depths.
Any surface you see in these caves will be crawlable and climbable using natural body motion and climbing tools. Walls, ceilings, narrow ledges, and every other surface could be a potential path, so you will need to explore the environment thoroughly. As you squeeze through extremely tight spaces and prepare for underwater cave diving, you will need to manage your breath wisely. The breath management mechanic is slated to arrive in the game in its first post-launch update. You will also have a decent array of tools to help you out in this cave system, such as hammers and pickaxes.
Cave Crave is now available at the Meta Quest store, with its PS VR2 version coming soon as well. The developers have announced future plans for the game as well, which will bring new maps, story expansions, and features to the game later.
