Focus Entertainment and Asobo Studio have released new gameplay footage for Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, offering the most detailed look yet at how the series has evolved since Requiem. The game launches August 27 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
Where the previous games built their tension around vulnerability and evasion, Resonance pushes toward something more confrontational. The new protagonist, Sophia, is a more capable fighter than Amicia ever was, and the gameplay reflects that. Combat is built around parrying, chaining combos with a dagger and sword, and using a grappling hook to drag enemies into environmental hazards. It is a more aggressive style that sits alongside stealth rather than replacing it; the trailer suggests both approaches will be necessary depending on the situation and enemy numbers.
The setting marks a significant departure from everything the series has done before. Sophia finds herself stranded on a Greek island, and as she explores deeper into its ruins, she begins experiencing flashbacks to the Minoan era. Through these visions, she inhabits the perspective of Theseus, the legendary Greek hero who lived more than two thousand years before her. A mysterious entity appears to be present across both timelines, and uncovering what connects them sits at the heart of the story. Sophia’s journey is framed as one of self-discovery, with her past and Theseus’s trials gradually converging as new allies and enemies emerge in both eras.
Beyond combat, exploration involves light-based puzzles tied to the island’s ancient architecture. These puzzles are part of the main gameplay loop and will allow Sophia to progress into the deeper end of the island and explore it for secrets.
Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is certainly a bold step for the franchise. Swapping plague-ridden medieval France for ancient Greek mythology, introducing a second playable character across a dual timeline, and leaning harder into direct combat are all meaningful shifts from what Innocence and Requiem established. Developers rarely change the main characters and settings of an established franchise because players start associating that franchise with its signature characters.
Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is available to pre-order now on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and Epic Games Store. It launches Day One on Xbox Game Pass and supports Xbox Play Anywhere as well.
