Marvelous USA has announced Muramasa: Revenant Blades, a fully revamped version of the beloved 2D action-RPG Muramasa: Rebirth, coming to Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PS5, and PC via Steam in early 2027.
The announcement, made during a Nintendo Direct, marks a significant moment for the series on multiple fronts. This is Vanillaware’s first-ever appearance on PC, and the first time the game will feature full English voiceover. Originally launched on Wii in 2009 and later on PlayStation Vita in 2013, the game has been rebuilt for modern hardware with support for up to 4K resolution, updated combat and weapon systems, and new modes and gameplay options.
The story is set in a mythologized version of feudal Japan, where a violent conflict breaks out over the legendary swords of master swordsmith Senji Muramasa. These blades grant immense power but drive their owners to bloodlust, drawing demons and evil spirits across the land in their wake. Six characters find their fates entangled in chaos; the original protagonists, Momohime and Kisuke, return alongside Okoi, Gonbe, Arashimaru, and Rajaki, the latter four originally introduced in the Vita version. All six storylines are available from the start, letting players choose their own path through the narrative in any order they like.
Combat remains the same as the original, side-scrolling hack-and-slash style, now refined with updated controls, over 100 swords to forge, and dozens of skills to upgrade and customize. Variable gameplay styles and additional modes give players more ways to engage with the experience, whether they’re in it for the action or want to soak in Vanillaware’s meticulously hand-crafted visuals, which have been remastered to take full advantage of 4K displays. The soundtrack, composed by the acclaimed Basiscape, also returns.
Physical pre-orders will open soon through the Marvelous USA Online Store and participating retailers. The standard edition is priced at $49.99 on PS5 and Nintendo Switch, and $59.99 on Nintendo Switch 2, which includes the full game on cartridge. A Limited Edition is available at $89.99 and $99.99, respectively, bundling the game with a collectible art book, a select soundtrack CD, and a 10″x14″ byōbu folding screen featuring Vanillaware artwork. Digital edition pricing for console and PC will be confirmed at a later date.
