Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 4.25 now supports the next-gen PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X consoles, as announced by the company. Epic Games just brought out the new version of Unreal Engine 4.35 which will allow developers to use it to develop launch games on the next generation of consoles.
The next-gen console platform support with Unreal Engine 4.25 will give initial support for the PS5 and Xbox Series X as first-class platforms. Epic Games also adds that throughout the year they will be updating the new version with optimizations, fixes, and certification requirements to support developers that intend to launch games on the next generation of consoles.
In addition, Unreal Engine 4.25 now comes with the Niagara visual effects system, which was being tested for Epic Games’ Fortnite. The visual effect system was previously in beta by is now production-ready in the latest version of the engine.
Niagara is now production-ready, with a polished new UI and signficant performance and stability improvements. There are also a host of new features, including the ability to create complex, large-scale particle effects such as flocking and chains, and to have particles react to music or other audio sources—all in real time.
Meanwhile, Epic is continuing to work on the progress of the Chaos physics and destruction system.
We’re happy to say that with this release, Chaos supports destruction, static mesh dynamics with collisions, cloth, hair, rigid-body skeletal control for items such as ponytails, and scene queries. There’s still more to come in future releases.
Unreal Engine is undoubtedly one of the most used engines by developers to create and develop games. There are plenty of big titles that were developed on this platform in the past and will do so in the future. Though Unreal Engine is free to use to develop your game, Epic does require you to pay a cut of the revenue if you decide to sell the game created using their engine.
