Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Young Link Guide
Below we have listed all the attacks that are specific and special to Young Link. Refer to each attack for a better understanding of how Young Link combats in the stage.
Introduction
Young Link is the remarkable younger version of the Link that is also in the game. Young Link is a balanced fighter with a wide array of options at his disposal. His strengths shine with his ability to set up projectiles based traps and zoning areas, that force enemies to either take shield damage or attack him.
Since he is a sword wielding fighter, and like most of the sword wielding brawlers in the game, the majority of Young Link’s attack extend an invulnerable sword towards enemies, and away from his vulnerable body.
Young Link can capitalize on most slow and sluggish foes, particularly those who can’t maneuver in the air well. He comes with effective ground based attacks, while his shield can block most projectiles aimed at him.
Grounded Attacks
This section of the guide contains all the grounded attacks that Young Link can perform while on the stage.
Neutral Attacks
Young Link has 4 Neutral attacks. The first attack is a sword slash that deals 2 damage, which is followed by another sword slash that deals 1.5 damage. If attack button is pressed repeatedly, a third heavy sworrd thrust attack launches an uppercut swipe that deals 0.3xN, 2.5 damage. The thurst attack knocks enemies away when hit.
Another rapid attack can be used instead of the thrust attack, that deals more damage, and sends enemies flying into the air. This rapid attack deals 3.5 damage to opponents.
Dash Attack
This attack deals 11 damage, where Young Link rushes forward with overhead slash that knocks opponents up and away.
Since this dash attack is unsafe when shielded, it is risky to use this on opponents. However, it is best used to chase down descending opponents coming down form a double jump or recovery move. On hit, it only knocks opponents away, with a little potential in follow up combos.
Smashes
Young Link has four smash attacks.
Side Smash
This attack deals 6 damage, where Young Link produces a powerful overhead blow with his sword. This attack sends opponents flying up and away. This smash is punishable if shielded, missed or dodged. But it is not as risky as your other smash attack
Side Smash 2
This attack deals 12 damage, where Young Link produces an optional smash attack that deals even more damage than the previous one. To activate this attack, you need to press attack during the first swing, and follow with an upward slash that knocks enemies in the air.
This attack however has is very risky if you fail to hit or is shielded. Nonetheless, the side smash is fast and can e used to punish recovering opponents at the ledge, or to check your opponent’s aggression.
Up Smash
The attack deals 3, 3, 8. In this attack, Young Link performs a three semi-circle upward sword slashes above his head. The first two hits strikes and pops the opponent in the air, while the final blow sends them flying way in the sky.
This is a high risk finishing attack, and is best used if you can make a hard read on your opponent. Since it is difficult to use and laggy, its best to stick with tilts in most combat situations.
Down Smash
This attack deals 13 damage, where Young Link clears out the area around him with a forceful back to back sweeping slash, that first strikes the ground in front of him, and is followed by a sweep behind him.
This smash is the fastest in Young Links arsenal, and thanks to its clearing out effect, it is an ideal move to use at opponents that may have rolled behind you.
Defensive Attacks
Young Link has 3 Defensive Attacks. The first is the Ledge attack that deals 9 damage. The second is the faceup Wake-up attack that deals 7 damage, while the third is the facedown Wake-up attack that deals 7 damage as well.
Tilts
Young Link has three Tilt Attacks.
Side Tilt
This attack deals 12 damage, where Young Link slams his sword aimed down at the ground, with a forward swing. This swing begins from up over his head and knocks opponents away. Since this attack begins from over his head, this can be used as an anti-air attack for airborne enemies.
This attack has solid knocking out potential, especially when against opponents with higher percentages, and near the edge of the stage.
Up Tilt
This attack deals 8 damage, where Young Link swipes his sword that covers all three angles starting from his front, raising up over head, and ending behind him. This is a solid and versatile anti-air attack that allows for potential juggle and combos at lower percentages.
Since this is a defensive move, it is best used after shielding an opponents’ attack that leaves them behind you.
Down Tilt
This attack deals 10 damage, where Young Link crouches low to the ground and slices at the opponent’s legs, and send them up into the sky. This is Young Links most useful ground attack, as it is quick, safe if shielded, and launches opponents away
Grabs
Young Link has five Grab Attacks. The first grab attack deals 1 damage. The Front and Back Throw deal 6 damage each. Finally, the Up throw and the Down Throw 6 damage each.
Young like grabs opponents with his hook, where you can decide where you want to throw them next. both the front and back deal the same amount of damage, and have potential for a follow up combo.
if you decide to grab with your hook in mid-air, it deals the most damage, but does not grab enemies. however, it starts much faster than the ground hookshot and also can be used to keep enemies away from you, essentially providing you enough space.
Aerial Attacks
This section of the guide will cover all the Aerial attacks that Young Link has.
Neutral Air Attack
This attack deals 10 damage, where Young Link delivers a fast kick mid-air, that leaves his leg extended for a long time. This attack is very versatile thanks to its start speed and persistence. Although this attack does not deal much damage, it is still has great knockout potential.
Forward Air Attack
This attack deals 6, 8 damage, where Young Link leaps into the air and performs a spinning two hit sword attack, that slashes at opponents in front and knocks them out of the sky.
This is a solid air attack that can allow you a second hi to connect with the right timing of the first strike. The first hit slightly pops up opponents, allowing for a potential deep forward air into neutral attack combo or tilt.
Back Air Attack
This attack deals 5, 7 damage, where Young Link performs two kick combos in the air, starting with a straight back kick with his left leg, and followed by a spin kick with his right.
This attack is a great edge guarding attack. With your back to a ledge and while the enemy is in an offstage recovery state, you can harass them with back-jump back airs, potentially knocking them out. Back air attack has very little lag, midair or on landing, so it’s great as a poke as well, allowing you to attack multiple times in a jump
Up Air Attack
This attack deals 15 damage, where Young Link performs an upward thrust attack with his sword, that stabs directly above his head. This attack has a lengthy duration and launches the first enemy that it hits.
You can use this attack to poke at enemies on platforms above you, or as an edge-guarding tool. It leaves you vulnerable if you miss with it, since it stays out for so long and has considerable end and landing lag. Use it deliberately and carefully.
Down Air Attack
This attack deals 18 damage, where Young Link performs a down thrust, where he descends from the air using his sword like a pogo stick, extended downward and bouncing off opponents that it connects with, and spiking them to the ground.
Like up air attack, your down air stays out for a long active period and can be punished if you’re imprecise with it, since it has a distinct and lengthy landing lag
Special Moves
Young Link has 4 special moves. All of them are detailed below.
Neutral Special – Fire Arrow
This attack deals 4 (12 at max charge) damage, where Young Link shoots fire arrows that cause more damage the longer his bow is drawn. This attack is used best when opponents are recovering back to the stage, having to deal with fire arrows and making it tough.
It can be special-reversed as well, abruptly reversing your trajectory if executed properly during a forward hop. For example, if you’re dashing away from an enemy, you can hop, input neutral special, then immediately flick the stick the opposite direction. This switches your facing direction immediately, allowing you to charge or fire an arrow at an enemy chasing you.
The fire on Young Link’s Fire Arrows isn’t just for show. As a fire-based attack, they can interact with explosives, detonating adult Link’s Remote Bombs, for instance.
Side Special – Boomerang
This attack deals 11 normal, and 13.2 flicked damage. In this attack, Young Link throws his boomerang. That bounces off the first opponent that it hits, and then returns back to Young Link, hitting anyone on its way back.
The attack comes in two different ways, where you can either flick or non-flick the boomerang. The flicked version of the attack deals more damage and travels farther than the non-flicked version.
Up Special – Spin Attack
This attack deals 1×13, 3 ground damage, and 3, 2×3, 3 airborne damage. In this attack, Young Link produces a multi hitting spin attack that ensnares struck opponents for a short period and then launches them away into the air.
The attack differs greatly when performed in the air compared to the ground as the grounded version offers high damage and allows for move attacks like Up air attack.
Down Special – Bomb
This attack deals 2×4 damage, where Young Link pulls out a bomb, that can be thrown at the enemy, and goes of after 4 seconds.
There are multiple ways bombs can be detonated, first is the four second fuse that it has, after which it explodes. Other ways are by impacting an opposing fighter or hitting the stage with the bomb at a certain speed. If you throw the bomb from the air with the down input, it will explode upon touching the ground. Or if you throw the bomb with a neutral attack, it bounces and rolls on the ground until it is detonated through other means, or from its fuse.
Final Smash – Triforce Slash
In this attack, Link first traps the opponent in the Triforce, and then hits them several times before launching them away for a knockout. Make sure you hit with the first strike to make sure Young Link begin his sealing combo.
