Sony recently bought Insomniac Games, the developers of Marvel’s Spider-Man and Sunset Overdrive. This means that PlayStation now has the rights to Sunset Overdrive, but what is Sony going to do with the IP?
PlayStation boss Shawn Layden talked about the matter, and he mentioned that for now, the company is not interested in Sunset Overdrive and is more interested in games such as Spider-Man and Ratchet & Clank. Here is what he had to say regarding the matter:
That was a great experience for Insomniac and they learned a lot through that, as well. As far as the IP itself, we really haven’t turned over the files on that one to see what that actually means, to be honest. We like what they’ve been doing in the Spider-Man franchise and things like Ratchet & Clank are certainly vital series in the present and future. That’s what we’re concentrating on.
As you can see, Insomniac Games has been acquired because of Spider-Man and the Ratchet & Clank games. That is not surprising, keeping in mind that these games have sold millions of copies and have made the company a lot of money. Spider-Man is a PlayStation exclusive title, and the only way you can play it is to buy a PS4. So, you can understand why Sony made this move and bought Insomniac Games.
The deal between Marvel and Sony has fallen through, so it will be interesting to see whether or not that affects future games. We know that it affects future movies, but at this point in time, we are not sure about the games. If Spiderman is no longer part of the MCU, can there be another Marvel’s Spider-Man game? Seems unlikely.
