New Painkiller Dev Diary Dives Into the Reimagining of the Classic Shooter

Painkiller Weapons Rogue Angel Co-Op Trailer Painkiller Dev Diary

3D Realms, Saber Interactive’s publishing division, and developer Anshar Studios have released the first dev diary for the upcoming Painkiller ahead of its release. The new dev diary gives us a deep dive into the creation of a totally new Painkiller and how the team took inspiration from the series’ roots to design different elements of the game, such as visuals, levels, weapons, and more. Narrating the dev diary is Damian Wyspianski, Creator Director, Kamil Wojciekiewicz, Art Director, and more, who give us all of the details.

As detailed in the dev diary, the main goal of developers at 3D Realms and Anshar Studio was to create something fast, challenging, and fun to play. They wanted to preserve the franchise’s attitude while pushing it forward in brand-new ways. This resulted in a game that is ‘all about dynamic movement and freedom in co-op, letting you flow through fights and dominate overwhelming hordes of enemies together’.

The dev diary also emphasizes the weapons created for Painkiller and describes them as ‘key pillar of this philosophy’. The weapons added to the game draw their design direction from the series’ origins, but with modern enhancements. This also includes the ability to upgrade the weapons based on your liking, allowing you to create unique builds that fit a variety of playstyles, and create deadly combos when you are playing it with your friends.

A free demo of Painkiller is currently available for you to try out through the game’s PC Steam page as part of the ongoing Steam Next Fest. It will be available until October 20, 2025, and the full release of Painkiller is slated for the next day, October 21, 2025, on PC via Steam, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. Pre-orders are live across all platforms and come with the Iron Crusade bonus skin pack. If you prefer, you can also pre-order a physical copy of the game, which also comes with the Burnished Pride weapons pack, including bonus gold weapon skins.
