Larian Studios has revealed new Baldur’s Gate 3 romance and companionship information along with the announcement that the Early Access has been delayed a week. Baldur’s Gate 3 Early Access will now release on October 6, 2020, instead of the original planned September 30, 2020 release date. The new trailer shared by the developer shares information on how the party dynamics work in their upcoming RPG.
As you might already know, Baldur’s Gate 3 is a game that is heavily dependent on your own choices and as you continue to make different choices, the world around you will react to it. Every decision that you make in the game, whether it is a dialogue decision or a combat decision or even while exploring the world, its consequences with be both short term and long term and it will shape your unique story.
The same case happens when it comes to your party. Every companion that you have in your party has its own unique personality, goals, and motivation. While they may join your party just because they have the same Illithid tadpole buried in their head, but you will need to put aside your differences to survive in the game. These relationships between you and your companions will be formed according to who you are, who you side with, and what you say in conversation with them.
As you create a custom character in Baldur’s Gate 3, you will be immersed in the story just like you are while playing as an Origin Character. Larian explains this as ‘For example, playing as a Drow Wizard will give you different dialogue options than playing as a Githyanki Warlock. These differences will also be present in your relationship dialogues. As you play the game, and you begin to make choices in combat, exploration, and conversation, you’ll be presented with situations and scenarios that are unique to your playthrough. Not too long into Early Access, you will be having an adventure so specific to your character, that no other player is going to see the exact same content’
Your party companions will not only have opinions about you but also about other party members of the party. So, if you start a romantic relationship with a party member that is not generally liked by other party members, this will have an effect on the party dynamics and they will start questioning you regarding the relationship. You will have to make a stern decision while keeping all factors in check. You will get to chat with your entire party at your camp.
Sarah Baylus, the lead writer at Larian Studios, commented on the matter:
At the end of the day this remains a D&D game and the most important character in a game of D&D is you.
Each companion has been created to feel authentic, with clear motivations, differences, and views on the world around them. For example, Lae’zel, a Githyanki warrior who trained her entire life to fight Mind Flayers, will approach intimacy very differently than Asterion, a vampire spawn who lured and seduced victims for his master.
It really comes down to each individual character, there is no overarching design about how a character should react. It’s really organic and about what makes sense for them.
“We are trying to make these relationships feel real and feel like the relationships you have in the real world. You will meet some people who you have nothing in common with, some will be useful to work together but that is going to be the extent of it. But there could be situations where you get on really well, you share similar goals and you love travelling together.
We want these relationships to feel like they would in the real world, like you are falling in love with someone or you are falling in like with someone, or you just feel attracted to someone. That should all feel real and authentic.
We have bad news, and good news. But first, the bad news! We're delaying to October 6, by a week. We'll be back later today with the romance & companionship update to pick you all up again. pic.twitter.com/j2NOEk4jAi
