Dovetail Games, in collaboration with Mattel, has announced Thomas & Friends: Wonders of Sodor, a standalone narrative adventure game bringing the Island of Sodor to consoles and PC. The game is coming to Steam, Epic Games Store, Microsoft Game Store, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch, with Nintendo Switch 2 supported via backward compatibility.
Dovetail Games is no stranger to railway simulations, having released titles in the genre since 2009. Over the years, the studio has built its reputation almost entirely around train-focused experiences. Its latest release marks a slight departure from strict simulation, stepping a little off the rails, but given Dovetail Games’ long track record, the project appears to be in capable hands.
Thomas & Friends: Wonders of Sodor Announced for Consoles and PC
Wonders of Sodor adapts the world of Thomas & Friends into an interactive format, letting players explore familiar locations, including the Main Line, Thomas’ Branch Line, and Knapford Harbour. The game is built around eight story-driven adventures inspired by classic episodes, with players operating locomotives, completing light puzzles, and freely moving around the island between objectives.
Narration is provided by Mark Moraghan, one of the original narrators from the television series. Players will work alongside Thomas, Diesel, Emily, Gordon, and Percy, running routes between locations such as Vicarstown and Knapford, and taking part in activities like the shunting-focused Truck Challenge. Exploration is structured but open-ended, allowing players to move across Sodor at their own pace while progressing through story content.
Wonders of Sodor continues Dovetail Games’ gradual expansion beyond traditional train simulation and into more accessible, family-oriented experiences. Unlike the studio’s core simulation titles, this project appears designed around narrative clarity and guided play, aligning more closely with younger audiences and long-time fans of the Thomas & Friends television series. Its broad platform support suggests a deliberate push to make the franchise playable across modern consoles without relying on simulation-heavy mechanics that might limit its reach.
Thomas & Friends: Wonders of Sodor is coming soon to PC and consoles, and is currently available to wishlist on Steam. A Thomas & Friends: Wonders of Sodor Deluxe Edition has also been announced. This version adds James as a playable character and introduces four additional adventures, expanding the narrative content available across the island.
