Xbox Scarlett Could Get A New Controller According To Patents

Xbox Scarlett controller

There has been a lot of buzz around Xbox Scarlett ever since Xbox boss Phil Spencer announced that the team was working on a new console. We know that it is in development but there is very little that we know for sure about the upcoming next-generation console. It seems that Xbox Scarlett might come with a new controller design.

Microsoft has filed a couple of patents which concern the Xbox controller. The same controller has been around for a while now and even though there have been some small changes over the years, it is pretty much the same.

The Elite controller is an option that you can get if you need some additional features and are willing to pay more for a premium controller but that is pretty much all that Microsoft has brought to the table. There could be a new controller for when the Xbox Scarlett comes out.

The following is what one of the Xbox controller patents describe:

A user-input device includes a user-actuatable trigger configured to pivot about a trigger axis, a rack gear interfacing with the user-actuatable trigger, a force-feedback motor including a drive gear interfacing with the rack gear, and a posture sensor configured to determine a posture of the user-actuatable trigger about the trigger axis. The force-feedback motor is configured to drive the rack gear based on a force-feedback signal.

While this is a lot of tech lingo to take in but from what I can understand it seems that the upcoming controller for Xbox Scarlett might come with force feedback. This is not something that has been confirmed so do take this with a grain of salt.

Also, it is worth noting that Microsoft is a huge company and has hundreds of patents and all of them have not ended up to be actual products. We might not even get this feature at the end of the day. Another patent reads as follows:

A user-input device includes a user-actuatable trigger configured to pivot about a trigger axis, a rack gear, a return spring operatively intermediate the user-actuatable trigger and the rack gear, a force-feedback motor and a posture sensor configured to determine a posture of the user-actuatable trigger about the trigger axis. The return spring is configured to forward bias the user-actuatable trigger toward an extended posture. The force-feedback motor is configured to drive the rack gear based on a force-feedback signal and thereby adjust a spring force applied by the return spring to the user-actuatable trigger,” the patent description reads.

This is all very interesting indeed. The Xbox Scarlett console is rumored to release in 2020 and it would be great to have a new controller to go with the console. Force feedback does sound like an interesting concept but it will all come down to the actual implementation.
