Developer Stoke Games has announced that its multiplayer tank shooter Tyr will enter Early Access this summer on Steam. The release window was revealed during the Second Wind Showcase, where a new trailer offered a closer look at the game’s tactical vehicle combat and class-based team play.
Tyr is a free-to-play multiplayer shooter built around armored vehicle combat, with a stronger focus on positioning and battlefield decision-making than fast reaction speed. Rather than treating tanks as simple damage dealers, the game leans into role-based combat, where different vehicles serve distinct strategic purposes. Light tanks can be used for scouting and enemy detection, heavier vehicles are built for frontline engagements, and long-range units provide support from a distance, creating a structure that relies heavily on team coordination.
Combat also places emphasis on precision and vehicle systems rather than straightforward health-bar damage. Armor angles affect whether attacks penetrate effectively, while specific parts of enemy tanks, such as tracks, can be targeted to temporarily disable movement or reduce combat effectiveness. The new trailer also previewed some of the more unconventional vehicle abilities, including cloaking technology, deployable drones, and even a transforming tank capable of taking to the air.
Progression is centered on upgrading and customizing vehicles to match different playstyles, but the studio says it is avoiding traditional pay-to-win systems often associated with free-to-play shooters. According to Stoke Games, new tanks and competitive advantages will not be locked behind high-cost purchases, with the game instead aiming for a progression model built around long-term player investment rather than premium shortcuts.
The project has gone through several years of closed testing with community feedback shaping development, and the studio says that process has been central to preparing the game for Early Access. A private playtest is currently accepting access requests on Steam for players interested in trying the game before launch.
