Rumor: Sony to Acquire Take-Two Interactive, Is GTA 6 Going to be a Sony Exclusive?

Sony Take-Two Interactive

Sony is reportedly in talks to acquire Take-Two Interactive, which is a parent company of both 2K Games and Rockstar Games. If the acquisition does happen, games like Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead Redemption, and NBA can all be added to the list of Sony’s exclusive games.

The story comes from the U.S. investor news site MarketWatch where analysts speculate that Sony is in “advanced talks” to acquire Rockstar Games parent company, Take-Two Interactive, which in turn lead to an increase in the company’s stock price.

Take-Two Interactive Software TTWO, +5.20% stock climbed 4.7% on rumors that Sony Corp. SNE, +0.86% “is in advanced board level discussions to acquire Take-Two Interactive in a mostly cash deal,” that would value the company at $130 share, according to Joel Kulina, head of technology and media trading at Wedbush Securities.

If Sony does acquire Two-Take, it would become the publisher of many upcoming major titles including Obsidian Entertainment’s The Outer Worlds, Gearbox’s Borderlands 3 and future NBA and WWE 2K titles. Not to forget Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption titles as well.

Sony would essentially be buying the kings of open world sandbox games, some very loved FPS titles, a bunch of sports titles to rival EA and a bunch of great strategy games. Here is a list of the bigger IPs Sony would be buying:

  • Grand Theft Auto
  • Red Dead REdemption
  • Mafia
  • Bioshock
  • 2K Sports (NHL, NBA)
  • Sid Meiers Civilization
  • Borderlands
  • Top Spin Tennis
  • L.A. Noire
  • Bully
  • Max Payne
  • Duke Nukem
  • The Darkness
  • Spec Ops
  • XCOM
  • Manhunt
  • The rights to WWE games
  • Evolve
  • The Golf Club
  • Kerbal space program
  • Midnight Club

For now, it is just a rumor as Kulina has commented that he was confused at the sudden attention. Adding that his original quote was just market speculation.

This is purely unconfirmed market speculation that is making the rounds,” he said. “I am not the source of this story in any regard. And not sure who quoted me as I didn’t speak with anyone over the phone.

This is as far as the rumor will go, even when Kulina has clarified that this could be market speculation. The fact that he came out to say that he was incorrectly quoted might put some weight, but the fact that Sony could be making a deal cannot be ruled out.

Do you think the rumor will be true? Do you think if Sony does acquire Take-Two Interactive, that GTA will be a Sony exclusive title? Let us know in the comments below.
