Playtonic Games Rejects Rumors of Microsoft Acquiring the Studio

Playtonic Microsoft

After much rumors and speculations that Microsoft might be planning to acquire Yooka-Laylee developer, Playtonic Games, the studio has given its official statement. The studio has denied that Microsoft is not acquiring the studio and it will continue to operate as a fully independent video game developer. The developer also cleared out the rumors of it working on the next Banjo-Kazooie title as well.

The whole drama started after former Rare artist Ed Bryan who joined Playtonic and shared a picture on Twitter of a Microsoft bag with the caption saying ‘Well, I never really had any plans to use this again.’ This started people talking about the developer being acquired by Microsoft in the future. After this tweet, some more LinkedIn profiles also led people to believe in a possible acquisition of Playtonic by Microsoft.

This has now cleared all rumors about Playtonic Games who can now work in peace on the next Yooka-Laylee game. As much as fans want to see a new Banjo-Kazooie game, it turns out that they will need to wait until the developer considers bringing the franchise back to life. It also makes sense because the Banjo franchise is not actually owned by Playtonic Games. Playtonic Games appears to be perfectly happy working on their own titles rather than working for other companies.

They will need to form a partnership for its development with Microsoft anyway so it is best for them to currently focus on their own IP and focus on making it better. Rare is currently busy with titles such as Sea of Thieves and does not seem interested in expanding its reach to any other titles or bringing back any of its classic titles back to life. We all know how well Sea of Thieves is doing at the moment.

Are you looking forward to a new Banjo-Kazooie title or would you prefer to see Playtonic release another Yooka-Laylee game? Let us know in the comments section below.
