The Psychic Grapple Beam is one of the many abilities Samus can unlock in Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. The Psychic Grapple is a special ability in Metroid Prime 4: Beyond that helps Samus to latch onto certain glowing grapple points and nodes. This upgrade helps players reach higher platforms and safely move across large gaps that cannot be crossed otherwise. Because many late-game areas rely on this mechanic, unlocking the Psychic Grapple is required to complete the story. This Metroid Prime 4: Beyond Psychic Grapple guide explains how you can unlock the Psychic Grapple in the game easily.
How to Unlock the Psychic Grapple in Metroid Prime 4: Beyond
You cannot unlock the Psychic Grapple right away. Before it becomes available, Samus must gain access to Vi-O-La IC Mode, which allows her to travel across lava while riding Vi-O-La. This ability is unlocked naturally as players progress, but the steps leading up to it are written below for clarity.
To unlock the Psychic Grapple, players must complete the following steps in order:
- Obtain the Fire Shot and use it to gain access to the Ice Belt
- Defeat Keratos at the end of Ice Belt to obtain the Psychic Boost Ball
- Head back to Volt Forge and travel to Tower 3
- Activate the Spinner in Tower 3’s first room using the Psychic Boost Ball
Once these steps are finished, Vi-O-La IC Mode becomes available.
Psychic Grapple Location: Flare Pool
With Vi-O-La IC Mode unlocked, you should head back to the Flare Pool area. The large lava pool that could not be crossed earlier can now be passed safely. Cross the lava and enter the facility located on the opposite side.
Inside the facility, you must move through several rooms and rescue a small number of Galactic Federation members. Continue progressing until reaching a boss encounter with Phenoros. Defeating this boss rewards Samus with the Psychic Grapple.
How to Defeat Phenoros
The fight against Phenoros takes place in two stages.
Phase One: Stay close to the boss while riding alongside it. Lock onto the glowing orbs located underneath Phenoros and shoot them until they are destroyed.
Phase Two: Target the orbs on the boss’s head first. Once those are gone, focus your attacks on Phenoros’s tongue to deal damage. After the boss collapses, switch to the Psychic Visor and then charge a Psychic Beam and carefully guide it down the boss’s throat. Once this final attack lands, the battle ends, and the Psychic Grapple is unlocked.
How to Use the Psychic Grapple
You should watch for Grapple Nodes and Grapple Points, which are marked by a clear grapple icon after unlocking it.
- Press and hold ZL to attach to a grapple point
- Release ZL to let go
- Use the left joystick to swing on certain grapple points
