This Subnautica 2 Guide details how you can find the fragments for Improved Fins and how you can craft them. Improved Fins are a useful upgrade in Subnautica 2. To unlock them, you will need to reach the Alien Ruins region during the main story, scan three separate fragments, and gather a few crafting materials.
Improved Fins Guide – Subnautica 2
Once you gain access to the Alien Ruins biome, use the Research Outpost as your starting point. This area will act as the main reference for all three scans.
First Fragment Location
From the outpost’s entrance, look directly below the platform area. Not far beneath, the first Improved Fins fragment can be found resting nearby.

Swim down to it and complete the scan. Since the blueprint requires three scans in total, this will only unlock part of the recipe.
Second Fragment Location
Return to the Research Outpost and begin moving toward the south-southeast, roughly around 165 degrees. In the distance, you should notice a small area lit up with lights. That location contains the second fragment, besides the crate.

There are several other scannable objects in this section, so it is worth exploring while you are there. However, the Improved Fins scan is the main item you need. Once you find it, scan the fragment to continue progressing toward the blueprint.
Third Fragment Location
After collecting the second scan, face directly south and look downward from your current position. The final fragment is hidden inside a crate below.

The crate can be easy to miss at first glance, so look carefully around the area until you spot it. Scan the last fragment, and the Improved Fins blueprint will finally unlock.

How to Craft Improved Fins
After unlocking the blueprint, you can craft the Improved Fins using the following materials:
- Basic Fins
- Fiber Mesh
- 2 Conduit Crystals
Fiber Mesh requires Fiber, which is made from Fibrous Pulp. You will also need Strong Acid, which can be created in the Processor using Necrolei Cysts materials.
Where to Find Conduit Crystals
To collect Conduit Crystals, head back to the Research Outpost and travel toward the Angel Comb area. It is advisable to turn on your beacon. From there, move southeast around 125 degrees toward a nearby structure.
Near this location, you will find a Conduit Crystal deposit attached to the environment. These deposits can only be broken using the Sonic Resonator. Once destroyed, each deposit gives 3 Conduit Crystals.

After breaking the first one, continue your journey east to locate two additional crystal deposits nearby. One sits on a lower ledge, while another sits slightly above it on a higher ledge.
By gathering enough Conduit Crystals along with the other crafting materials, you will be able to create the Improved Fins. That is all for this guide. Additional Subnautica 2 guides are linked below:
