Crystal Dynamics is Developing the Next Tomb Raider with Unreal Engine 5

Tomb Raider Unreal Engine 5

Crystal Dynamics has announced that it is developing the next Tomb Raider title with Unreal Engine 5. Tomb Raider is one of the most iconic franchises in the video game industry and we have seen this game go through nearly all of the video game cycles. From the first Tomb Raider title released way back in 1996 to the latest title Shadow of the Tomb Raider released back in 2018, we have seen this franchise go through dynamic changes throughout the generations.

With Epic Games recently launching Unreal Engine 5 for all developers, a lot of developers have revealed their brand-new projects which are currently using this brand-new engine. Crystal Dynamics took over Tomb Raider franchise with Tomb Raider: Legend and have since been working on all of the Tomb Raider titles. The next Tomb Raider title is also coming from Crystal Dynamics and the studio is using the all-new Unreal Engine 5 for its development.

Dallas Dickinson, Tomb Raider franchise general manager at Crystal Dynamics detailed:

This new engine translates into next level storytelling and gameplay experiences and that’s why we are thrilled to announce today that we have just started development of our next Tomb Raider game powered by Unreal Engine 5.

Our goal is to push the envelope of fidelity and to deliver the high quality cinematic action adventure experience that fans deserve both from Crystal Dynamics and the Tomb Raider franchise.

Will Kerslake, Tomb Raider franchise game director at Crystal Dynamics also added:

We’ve got big ambitions for the future of Tomb Raider. Our origin trilogy back in 2013 told the story of Lara’s early days when she was forged into a survivor, became a hero and ultimately the Tomb Raider.

But the classic games featured a seasoned and confident adventurer, travelling the world, unlocking its secrets, often standing alone against cataclysmic forces

We envision the future of Tomb Raider unfolding after these established adventures, telling stories that build upon the breadth of both Core Design’s and Crystal Dynamics’ games, working to unify these timelines.

With Tomb Raider’s extensive history, this is not an easy task, and we ask for patience as we go through the development process. We don’t have plans for a major game announcement in the near future.

If you are looking forward to playing the next Tomb Raider, then you have to wait a long time because Crystal Dynamics has detailed that they have no plans for announcing the title any time soon. Additional details will be released about the new Tomb Raider as development progresses on the title. Previously, CD Projekt Red revealed that it is developing a new The Witcher game in Unreal Engine 5 as well.
