In Pokemon Legends: Z-A, your starter Pokemon may not be from the original Kalos region, but you can still get the famous Kalos starters, including Froakie and its evolution, Greninja. To get Froakie, you will first need to complete a challenge. The good thing is that once you complete this mission, you’ll have Froakie early in the game, and evolving it into Greninja won’t take too long. In this Pokemon Legends: Z-A Greninja Guide, we will see how we can get Froakie, evolve it into Greninja, and eventually to Mega Greninja.
How to Get Froakie in Pokemon Legends: Z-A
You need to complete a side mission in the game before you can meet Froakie. To do that, speak with Emma, then head toward the northeastern part of Lumiose City. From there, go north of the Jaune Pokemon Center and follow the outer path. There, you will find a construction worker named Surv. He will be standing beside some scaffolding with a Froakie next to him.
Talk to Surv to start a side mission called “A Challenge from Froakie.” Completing this mission will allow you to get Froakie in your party.
Complete Side Mission: “A Challenge from Froakie”
The side mission consists of three obstacle courses, each with a time limit. You’ll need to complete all three to impress Froakie and earn it as a reward.
- You must finish this first obstacle course in under 30 seconds. After it, Froakie and Surv will run ahead to another location, so you need to follow them.
- The second course must be completed in less than 40 seconds. Climb the platforms and move across the beams carefully. You have enough time, so don’t rush and risk falling. After reaching the top, Froakie will laugh and run again.
- The third and final course will be in the northern part of Lumiose City near the Rouge Pokemon Center. This time, you will have 50 seconds to complete. This third challenge is longer and trickier. This is how you can clear it safely:
- First, climb the ladder, then run and roll by pressing Y to cross the first gap.
- Run forward and climb another ladder.
- Look down carefully toward the scaffolding below you and roll down to land on the lower.
- Cross the narrow beam slowly, then roll over the angled beam to reach the next platform.
- Turn left and glide across the final beam to reach Froakie at the end.
- When you complete this challenge, you will get: Froakie of Level 14, 3 XS Candies, A aS Candy, and 1,800 Poke dollars.
How to Get Greninja
Once you’ve caught Froakie, you can evolve it through leveling up:
- Froakie → Frogadier at Level 16.
- Frogadier → Greninja at Level 36.
How to Get Mega Greninja
As we know, most of the Pokemon in the game can be easily evolved through the Mega Stone that can be bought from the Stone Emporium on the southern side of Lumiose City. However, not all Mega Stones are available at the Stone Emporium.
To evolve Greninja, it requires a Greninjite stone. This item allows Greninja to Mega Evolve during battles once you have built up enough energy. When you get the Greninjite, simply give it to Greninja to hold. Greninjite is not available at the Stone Emporium.
The only way to earn Greninjite in the game is by taking part in online ranked battles in the Link Play menu. You will need to compete in the Z-A Battle Club and reach Rank K during Season 1 to receive it as a reward.
But keep in mind that you will get this only in Season 1. November 6, 2025, is the last date to claim the Greninjite reward from Season 1, so make sure to participate before the deadline.
