Developer Frontier has announced that the studio is delaying the launch of the upcoming launch of the Odyssey update for Elite Dangerous. In their official press release, Frontier details that the main cause of this delay is coronavirus and the challenges that arose from the effects of the virus on the development team. With fresh lockdowns in place around the world, work is certainly affected, and Frontier is also delaying the launch of the upcoming update because of this very reason.
However, Frontier has revealed that the PC version of Elite Dangerous: Odyssey is not that far and the Alpha will release in early Spring 2021. This is still a little late than what was originally planned however it will release in early spring 2021 and will allow the developer and players to start testing out the update in an Alpha phase. It will bring all-new features and systems online throughout the period.
As the features and updates roll out, the developer will keep working on the game based on new fan-feedback as user-testing goes on the Alpha. This release will be available to all Elite Dangerous: Odyssey Deluxe Alpha and Lifetime Expansion Pass holders. The full PC release of Odyssey is now planned for late spring 2021 and this will include the full Odyssey expansion with additional tweaks and fixes based on fan-feedback collected from players during the Alpha phase.
For consoles, however, the developer has pushed the update much later to Autumn 2021 and players will need to wait until the end of the year to finally experience Odyssey in Elite Dangerous. This includes both the PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game. The developer further details:
We understand that for many, this additional delay will be frustrating. Once again, we would like to apologize wholeheartedly to our community, especially our console Commanders. However, as mentioned previously, we feel it is vital to ensure that the content being released on consoles meets the highest standards and this will require this additional extension to our roadmap.
Throughout this time we will continue to bring more news, videos, and content of the development in progress. We would like to thank you all for the ongoing support and we are very excited to bring this new era to the game with you. Your feedback, support, and involvement are a vital part of this process and we are looking forward to a shared Alpha experience, which will be touching down very soon.
