Publisher Ratalaika Games and developer Steelkrill Studio have announced the release date of their WW1 survival horror game Trenches. Trenches will be released on consoles on January 20, 2023, and will surely send chills down your spine with its atmospheric setting and jumpscares. To celebrate the release date announcement, the developer has released a brand-new trailer for the game as well which you can check out below:
Set in the ghostly setting of WW1, the game Trenches takes its inspiration from historic incidents, watching a lot of documentaries, and a fascination for it. Apart from this, the development team also points to the movie 1917 as a big determining factor for the game and they also cite a comment ‘WW1 is often forgotten as to how brutal it was’. In Trenches, you will wake up after an explosion and you find everything in ruins around you.
In one of your pockets, you find a picture of your family and from there, you must try everything you can to get back to them. The game features claustrophobic environments and shows you the aftermath of the war from the eyes of a soldier caught behind enemy lines. In Trenches, you must protect yourself, as well as your sanity in order to survive. You must escape by finding clues and objectives scattered around the huge Trench map which is designed like a maze.
Each playthrough in the game is unique because these objectives are randomized on each playthrough, and you will have a completely different experience every time you play the game. A monster will always be following the player so you will need to hide from it and be careful not to alert it to your presence. The game gives you a trench whistle which shows you the location of the next objective but it also alerts the monster to your location, so it is always a gamble.

We wanted to make players feel like they really were stuck in the Trenches and to feel helpless and lost at all times. The gritty atmosphere helped, but also sounds and environment plays a big part too. We focused a lot on creating the right environment and since the game takes place only in the trenches, we could focus on those little extra details when it comes to the graphics.

Trenches will be released next week on January 20, 2023, on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. The game is priced at $9.99 and will be uniform across all platforms. The game is already available on Steam and now Ratalaika Games is porting the game to all of the consoles. On Steam, the game is currently sitting on a ‘Very Positive’ rating and is currently out in early access.
