Text-Based Crime RPG TORN Surpasses 100,000 Daily Active Players After 22 Years

TORN

Text-based crime RPG TORN has surpassed 100,000 daily active players for the first time in its history, the developers confirmed earlier this week. The milestone comes more than two decades after the game’s launch and reflects a sharp rise in player activity over the past two years.

The game, a text-driven crime RPG focusing on player interaction and long-term progression, has built its audience around a persistent online world where users engage in activities such as combat, trading, faction play, and social systems. Unlike modern MMOs built around real-time graphics, TORN relies on browser-based mechanics and written systems, positioning itself closer to a social simulation than a traditional multiplayer game.

According to the developer, daily active users have more than doubled since early 2024, when the game recorded around 48,000 players. The increase has been attributed to a combination of infrastructure improvements that allowed the platform to support a larger audience, along with expanded marketing efforts that brought in new players. The studio also noted that performance has improved despite the growth, with backend optimizations supporting higher concurrency.

Originally launched in 2004 as a small independent project, TORN has evolved into a long-running live service title supported by an international development team. Its design emphasizes persistence and player-driven systems, with long-term users often remaining active for years. The game has continued to expand gradually without fixed release cycles, prioritizing incremental updates and stability over large, scheduled expansions.

The developers say additional updates are planned for 2026 and beyond as the game continues to grow its player base. Players interested in checking out TORN can head to its official website and start playing it.
