Square Enix Cancels Tournaments in Japan After Multiple Death Threats

Square Enix Tournaments

According to Kotaku, Square Enix has canceled its Starwing Paradox tournaments across four cities in Japan. The company states that this comes after multiple death threats that they have received against the Starwing Paradox management team.

This comes after the studio received many death threats following the Kyoto Animation arson attack. An accused man was arrested last month, however, it seems to be that there are many other sources of these death threats. Another man was arrested after threatening to kill all of the Square Enix staff members.

Square Enix has released a statement in Japanese on its website. A rough translation of the statement can be read below:

August 17 (Sat) and August 24 (Sat) 2019 are scheduled to be held in 4 cities in Tokyo, Yokohama, Nagoya and Fukuoka. # 3 # 4 “has been canceled.

From last week until yesterday, there were several killing notices to the “Star and Wings Paradox” management team. In response to this, we consulted with the police on the premise of submitting a damage report and, after careful discussions with relevant parties, we will give the top priority to customer safety and take the above measures. I decided.

We apologize to those who were looking forward to the event and apologize for any inconvenience. Thank you for your understanding.

The cancellation of the tournaments can be understandable after multiple death threats, and when the tragedy of Kyoto Animation attack is still fresh in Japan. Last month, Kyoto Animation was attacked by an arsonist that killed 33 people in the Kyoto Animation studio. The suspect was arrested and was heard saying “[They] stole [my] novel, so I committed arson, according to the Kyoto Newspaper.
