Sony is Halting Production of PS Vita Soon

Sony PS Vita Halting

Sony has announced that it halting the production of PS Vita soon. An official date is not known at this point but the official store pages for both PS Vita Black and PS Vita Aqua Blue state that shipments will end soon.

This is not the first time we have heard of PS Vita going out of production as Sony had already announced before that it will stop the production of PS Vita soon and now we know that is going to happen soon.

Gematsu estimates that last time when Sony had to stop PS3’s production back in 2017, the same notice was posted 2 months before the production ended. At this time, we do not know if the same is going to happen with PS Vita as well.

Sony released PS Vita back in 2011 and despite showing much potential at the start, it never went into mainstream gaming. We can blame Sony itself for PS Vita’s failure. There were very few first party titles however it did get some awesome titles.

Games like Killzone: Mercenary, Unit 13 and Uncharted: Golden Abyss showed that PS Vita had potential but sadly no other developer took enough time to release proper titles for it. It ended up being an emulator for PS1 titles and indie games. One of the biggest problems with PS Vita was its memory.

The memory cards were very expensive and the fact that you had to switch Memory Cards just to use different IDs on the same console was very weird. The console’s architecture was pretty complex as well which did not facilitate porting games to it as well which led to a lot of titles skipping out Vita.

PSP was a huge success and Vita could have followed its footsteps only if Sony had given it a little more attention and paid attention to fan feedback and actually implemented that in the revised model of PS Vita.

Now PS Vita is finally going out of production although it had died a long time ago. Portable consoles like 3DS and later the release of Nintendo Switch still show that portable gaming is not dead yet. Only if the developer takes it seriously, it is still a huge potential market for everyone.

You can check out PS Vita’s reveal trailer below as it dies away in the past.
