Sony Has Confirmed that PS5 Will Not Natively Support PS3, PS2, PS1 Games

PS5 Update USB

Sony has recently confirmed that its upcoming console PS5 will not natively support PS3, PS2, and PS1 titles. This confirmation after Ubisoft earlier claimed this very same thing but later they removed the claim. With the recent development, however, it is now confirmed by Sony itself that PS5 will not support PS3, PS2, or PS1 titles natively.

This was revealed by PlayStation boss Jim Ryan who spoke with Famitsu and detailed that with the PS5 console, the focus was always on PS5-specific engineering and not older generations of the console. Making the console compatible with PS4 titles makes sense because more than 100m players currently play on PS4 and many of them would love to bring their PS4 titles to the newer generation.

His official statement to Famitsu states:

We have been building devices with a focus on PS5-specific engineering. Among them, PS4 already has 100 million players, so I thought that I would like to play PS4 titles on PS5 as well, so I introduced PS4 compatibility. While achieving that, we focused on incorporating high-speed SSDs and the new controller DualSense in parallel. So, unfortunately, compatibility with [PS3, PS2, PS1] has not been achieved.

With the new statement, Sony has confirmed that almost 99% of the PS4 titles will be supported by PS5 via backward compatibility. However, a confirmed list of all supported titles is still unknown. Additional details of PS5’s backwards compatibility even with the PS5 console is yet to be further detailed by Sony. Sony recently held a PS5 Showcase event that confirmed the price, release date, and other details about the console but the release is still 2 months away so we can expect more news to eventually drop soon regarding this.
