SEGA has announced The Mega Drive Mini 2 for the Japanese market during their latest broadcast focused on the Japanese Market. This comes after SEGA released the original Mega Drive Mini back in September 2019. To check out the console, we have linked the exact moment where the trailer for the Mega Drive Mini 2 starts in the 1-hour 46-minute video below:

The Mega Drive Mini 2 is slated for release in Japan on October 27, 2022, at a price of ¥9,980. This translates to roughly $75 which is around the same as those of the earlier Mini consoles we saw coming out of Japan. At this point, not a lot of games or details have been confirmed by SEGA however some of the confirmed titles coming to the Mega Drive Mini 2 include:

  • Bonanza Bros.
  • Fantasy Zone
  • Magical Tarurūto-kun
  • Mansion of Hidden Souls
  • Popful Mail
  • Shining Force CD
  • Shining in the Darkness
  • Silpheed
  • Sonic CD
  • Thunder Force IV
  • Virtua Racing

The trend of the ‘Mini’ consoles started when Nintendo announced and released both the original NES and SNES consoles in Mini forms. They both came with modern features such as HDMI slots and built-in games and SEGA followed suit with its own Mega Drive Mini and Sony launched the PlayStation Classic which was another mini console with built-in games. After the success of NES and SNES, Nintendo also announced the Nintendo Classic Mini Double Pack and the N64 Mini consoles.

So far, SEGA has only announced The Mega Drive Mini 2 for the Japanese Market however previously, we have seen all of the new ‘Mini’ consoles released in the Western markets so our fingers are crossed when we say that SEGA Mega Drive Mini 2 will eventually come to the western market as well.
