ASUS has unveiled the ROG Phone 5, and the phone comes in 3 different models: the ROG Phone 5, ROG Phone 5 Pro, and ROG Phone 5 Ultimate. The main difference between the three models is the RAM and storage configurations.
The Phones come with industry-leading hardware and some special perks that you will not find in any other phone in the market. The ASUS ROG Phone 5 builds upon the foundation laid by the ROG Phone 3. ASUS has skipped the number 4 from its lineup as it is associated with a superstition in East Asian countries.
All three editions, the ASUS ROG Phone 5, the ROG Phone 5 Pro, and the ROG Phone 5 Ultimate, are powered by the Snapdragon 888 processor. In the base model ROG Phone 5, the RAM and storage configuration starts from 8 GB LPDDR5 and 128 GB, which tops at 16 GB and 256 GB, respectively.
For the ASUS ROG Phone 5 Pro, the RAM and storage configurations are 16 GB and 512 GB, respectively. And finally, the Ultimate version is going to ship with a whopping 18GB RAM with 512GB storage
The ROG Phone 5 has a dot-matrix pattern for the ROG logo on the back, which can show a gradient of two colors at once instead of one fixed color. The ROG Phone 5 Pro comes with a tiny colored PMOLED display called ROG Vision. It can be used to display custom visuals or messages for incoming alerts.
The ROG Phone Ultimate has a monochrome display. The display shows customizable graphics for incoming calls, during charging, or while a game is loading. Coming to the phone displays, the ASUS ROG Phone 5 brings a 6.78-inch AMOLED display, an E4 material panel, and is custom-made by Samsung. The displays have a refresh rate of 144 Hz, which is the highest on a phone yet.
The display has a touch sampling rate of 300Hz and a latency of 24.3ms. ASUS also claims that the display has a peak brightness of 800 nits and is 23% brighter than the previous model. The phones also come with Pixelworks i6 display processor chip that will use AI to improve picture quality, upscale SDR content to HDR, suppress visual noise, and more.
Asus designed the phones to have a performance advantage thanks to other components, and, surprisingly, the biggest win came from the battery. All three models come with 6,000 mAh batteries. The battery is split into 2 cells of 3,000 mAh and arranged in an MMT orientation.
According to Asus, the energy supplied to these cells is from the center instead of one of the ends, which will reduce impedance and heating while charging. The new battery is also designed to take advantage of the phone’s cooling system. The phones also come with 65-watt HyperCharge technology and Qualcomm QuickCharge 5.0.
Not all has changed, though, from the previous model. The camera setup in all three phones remains unchanged, and it is still a 64MP Sony IMX686 sensor for the primary camera, a 13MP ultrawide-angle camera, and a 5MP macro camera. On the front, you get the same 24-megapixel selfie camera. However, there are some new software features and improvements that may improve the camera experience somewhat.
