EA Vows Full Commitment in Making Star Wars Game After Cancellation Reports

In a recent report by Kotaku, EA had cancelled the open world Star Wars game which was in development by EA Vancouver. However, updates now indicate that the game the studio is focusing on a smaller scale game that should likely be out in 2020.

Furthermore, the company did not lay off anybody when transitioning projects, which is what some where fearing and speculating might be the effect of the cancellation of the project. The assurance is commendable considering the state of job security in the video game industry can suggest lay-offs following the cancellation of a project or closure of a studio.

EA has commented on the whole matter, speaking to Kotaku in an update. An official spokesperson of for the company stated:

There’s been speculation overnight about one of our Star Wars projects. As a natural part of the creative process, the great work by our team in Vancouver continues and will evolve into future Star Wars content and games. We’re fully committed to making more Star Wars games, we’re very excited about Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order from Respawn, and we’ll share more about our new projects when the time is right.

The statement steers clear of any reports of the cancellation of the project, while also emphasizing that the project is still in development with the studio being fully committed to the project. There will likely be more information about the game coming this year at E3. This is where we might get to know what the end product will be after the cancelling the open word aspect of the game.

EA Vancouver which is a large studio that is notable for games like FIFA and Star Wars Battlefront, had been working on this open-world Star Wards game since October of 2017, when EA closed Visceral Games. The studio continued to use some of the assets from Visceral’s title, but transitioned the title to become an open-world experience. When EA Vancouver tool over, the entire project was rebooted in order to transform it into an open world game.
