Driveclub Servers Shutting Down Next Year, Digital Sales Ending This Year

Driveclub Servers

Sony has announced that online servers for Driveclub, Driveclub VR and Driveclub Bikes will be shut down next year while digital sales will end this year. The servers will no longer work after March 31, 2020, while digital sales will end this year on August 31, 2019,

Driveclub was developed by Evolution Studios who are famous for their Motorstorm titles from the PS3 era. It was initially planned as a PS4 launch title but due to technical difficulties, the title was later delayed and it was finally released in October 2014. The game focused on players racing in clubs which the name of the title pretty much suggests.

Driveclub was one of the best looking early PS4 titles and even if you play it today the game looks amazing and does not look like an early PS4 launch title. Before its launch, Sony had announced that Driveclub will be given to all PS Plus subscribers for free. This plan was later changed and after much fan outcry, a special stripped down Driveclub version was given to PS Plus subscribers.

The game had a very stuttering launch and the many delays were the main reason behind the game’s commercial failure. The launch was so bad that Sony ended up shutting down Evolution Studios and this closed the chapter of the Motorstorm franchise as well as any future titles in the Driveclub franchise.

The game featured amazing visuals couple and soundtrack but the gameplay was mediocre. The cars handled like tanks however they were very detailed and looked amazing. One of the reasons behind Driveclub’s commercial failure could also be its poor gameplay. Several DLCs were later released for the game which also introduced motorbikes to the title.

Driveclub VR was released with the PS VR however it did not sell well as well and thus all hope was lost for the franchise. Sony is now finally pulling the plug on the game entirely and pulling it from PSN as well as shutting down its servers. Players who purchased the game will be able to play it even after the sales end and servers shut down but online features will no longer work.

Anyone who wants to purchase Driveclub and its DLC have until August 31, 2019. The game can be played entirely in singleplayer mode once the servers shut down. The game servers will be shut down next year on March 31, 2020, so players can at least have some time to enjoy the last few months of Driveclub with their friends online.
