DirectX Ray Tracing Support Comes in Windows 10 October Update

The official update of Windows 10 for the month of October is out. Your PC or laptop should download it automatically. Just in case the update is not downloaded automatically, you can do the traditional approach by visiting the Microsoft.com for a manual download.

The October update of Windows 10 brings in few new things to the table. We are particularly interested in DirectX Ray Tracing official support. The update brings it officially and you no longer need to turn-on the developer mode to see the ray tracing effects.

Back at, few games were announced to release with the support of ray tracing. Shadow of the Tomb Raider is one of the games released so far that supports DirectX Ray Tracing feature at its best.

DirectX Ray Tracing feature in short reduces time a game designer puts into shadows, light effects, custom ambient occlusion. Ray Tracing simply takes in available parameters and generates the effects in real time.

Back at SIGGRAPH event, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang praised the potential of real-time DirectX Ray Tracing. He further said:

Hybrid rendering will change the industry, opening up amazing possibilities that enhance our lives with more beautiful designs, richer entertainment and more interactive experiences. The arrival of real-time ray tracing is the Holy Grail of our industry. 

When Nvidial officially revealed its RTX 2080 and 2080 Ti, they showcases few games with ray tracing support. Just in case you missed the trailer, watch here.

In addition to the trailer, Nvidia also listed few games that will take advantage of this feature. Here is a list of all games for now, that will utilize the ray tracing potential of GeForce RTX graphics cards.

t is worth noting that Nvidia mentioned real-time ray tracing feature exclusively for RTX series. This feature will be absent from previous generation of Pascal architecture based GTX 1000 series. In addition to that, only GeForce RTX 2070, RTX 2080 and RTX 2080Ti will support this feature.
