Belgian developer Badass Mongoose has delayed Helix: Descent N Ascent to July 23, 2026, with the game set to launch on Steam and Nintendo Switch. The studio said the decision follows a strong reception to the demo, prompting additional development to expand the game’s content and finalize the Switch version.
Helix: Descent N Ascent is an atmospheric puzzle-adventure built around exploration and ability-based progression. Players move through a fragmented, monochrome world by unlocking powers that can be combined to interact with the environment in different ways, forming the core of its puzzle design. Progression is tied to how these abilities are layered together, gradually opening new paths and solutions rather than relying on fixed mechanics.
The game’s structure centers on a solitary journey through a stark, abstract setting, where the player encounters a doppelganger-like figure that appears to mirror and oppose their actions. This dynamic feeds into a broader narrative focused on identity, memory, and isolation, with storytelling delivered primarily through visual cues and environmental changes instead of dialogue or text.
The additional development time is intended to expand the overall scope of the experience while refining its systems. According to the studio, the Nintendo Switch version required further optimization work to ensure it matches the performance and presentation of the PC release, particularly given the game’s reliance on detailed 2D environments and visual transitions.
Visually, the game draws from black-and-white comics, including influences from 1980s indie comics, 1990s manga, and Franco-Belgian illustration styles. This approach is paired with a soundtrack by Jim Guthrie, known for his work on Sword & Sworcery and Below, with the audio design playing a central role in shaping the game’s tone and pacing.
