AMD Athlon 220GE And 240GE, First Dual-core Chips With Vega Graphics

AMD Athlon 220GE

AMD has already released the Athlon 200GE series APUs but now we have the AMD Athlon 220GE and 240GE chips that have 2 cores and 4 threads and come with AMD Vega graphics. These chips will compete against the Intel Pentium and Celeron CPUs.

These chips are meant for the entry-level segment and you can install them in motherboards that cost as little as $50. The chips come with AMD Vega 3 graphics that have a 192 stream processor. The chips have a TDP of 35W which is very low for a desktop CPU but then again they do not offer a lot of power. You should get better results when compared to Intel integrated graphics solutions but if you want to do gaming at decent settings then you will need a dedicated graphics card.

These chips support the AMD AM4 socket and will work with B350, B450, A320 and other motherboards. The AMD Athlon 220GE and 240GE support USB 3.1 Gen.2, NVMe and 4K output. The 4K output is for media consumption. You will still need a very powerful dedicated graphics card for gaming at higher resolutions. If that is something that you are interested in, you should look for a CPU with more than 2 cores.

The Athlon chips that were released back in the day were extremely successful due to the value for money that they offered budget games and AMD has brought the brand back in order to do the same. The first batch did pretty well and now that these chips are refreshed with higher clock speeds, it will be interesting to see how much attention these chips get.

The AMD Athlon 220GE and 240GE are based on the 14nm process and even though they are dual-core chips, they offer 3.4 GHz and 3.5 GHz clock speeds respectively.

Let us know what you think about the AMD Athlon 220GE and 240GE chips and whether or not you are interested in picking up one of these APUs.
