Play by Play Studios, in partnership with the National Basketball Association and the National Basketball Players Association, has announced that NBA THE RUN, a new arcade-style basketball title, will launch in June 2026 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. The announcement was accompanied by the first gameplay trailer for NBA THE RUN, highlighting its fast-paced, streetball-focused approach.
The game’s main mode is revealed to be the “Run the World” tournament, a four-round knockout competition built around 3v3 matches played on global street courts. Each run culminates in a final match at a designated championship venue, where teams compete for progression and leaderboard recognition. The structure emphasizes quick matches and repeatable runs, aligning the game more closely with modern competitive multiplayer formats than traditional season-based sports titles.
The game will launch with three core modes: Knockout Squads, where players control a single character within a team of three; Knockout Solos, which allows full control over a custom team; and Knockout Friends, a private tournament mode supporting both cooperative and competitive play with up to 48 participants. This structure is designed to support both solo and team-based playstyles while keeping matches accessible and session-friendly.
Gameplay focuses on responsiveness and fluidity, with mechanics built around fast transitions, aerial plays, and one-on-one skill moves. The roster includes more than 30 licensed NBA players alongside a smaller group of original streetball characters, each with distinct playstyles. Online performance is supported by rollback netcode, aimed at maintaining synchronization during high-speed matches.
While rooted in basketball, NBA THE RUN leans toward an arcade-style experience rather than simulation, drawing inspiration from earlier street-focused sports titles while adapting to modern online play expectations. The game is the debut project from Play by Play Studios, a team composed of developers with prior experience across major sports and multiplayer franchises.
A closed beta test is scheduled for May 1 on Steam, offering a limited early look at the game ahead of its full release in June 2026. The full game is slated for release on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam in June 2026. Players interested in participating in its closed beta can apply through its dedicated website.
