Xbox lost this console war due to bad marketing, lack of exclusives and the quality of games. This generation was not too good for Microsoft keeping in mind how many units of the PS4 were sold. Xbox boss Phil Spencer talked about the matter and why the quality of Xbox games was not impressive this generation.
Spencer does seem confident that first party games will not be an issue moving forward. Xbox should have some quality games for the upcoming generation keeping in mind Microsoft just acquired some top studios such as Obsidian, Ninja Theory and Double Fine, to name a few.
Here is what Spencer had to say about the lack of game quality for Xbox this generation:
We did reach a time in our first party, where the number of games and studios that we actually had […] put a lot of pressure on everything and it became more difficult to manage a portfolio when you kind of needed everything […] to hit the date that it had picked three years ahead of time [and deliver a] very high level of quality. The support that we’re getting now and we’ve had over the last couple of years has allowed us to invest in our first party, adding eight new studios and really create room for us to focus on quality.
Microsoft has plenty of studios now and quality of games should no longer be an issue. At E3 we got a couple of announcements from Microsoft Studios such as The Outer Worlds. A game that is being developed by Obsidian.
We do not know what some of the studios such as Initiative, Turn 10 and Playground’s second team are working on right now. Spencer has admitted that not all upcoming games were revealed at E3 2019. So Microsoft does have some cards to play.
Xbox Scarlett is coming in the Fall of 2020 and the next generation is going to be very interesting indeed. Sony might have won the console war this time with the PS4 but things could be different moving forward.
Let us know what you think about the quality of games that Xbox makes and whether you think games will get better now.
