Review: Star Trek: Resurgence

Announced at The Game Awards 2021, developer Dramatic Labs and ViacomCBS Consumer Products have announced their brand new title Star Trek: Resurgence. Star Trek: Resurgence is a new third-person choice-driven adventure game that is set in the iconic sci-fi universe. Star Trek: Resurgence is slated for release in Spring 2022 and will release on all current and previous-gen consoles and PC.

Star Trek: Resurgence will be an interactive narrative video game that tells an original story set in the era shortly after the events of Star Trek: The Next Generation. You will assume the role of two principal characters, First Officer Jara Rydek and Engineering Crewperson Carter Diaz who are stationed aboard the U.S.S RESOLUTE. Both of them are trying to unravel a sinister mystery involving two alien civilizations on the brink of war.

The game will allow you to immerse yourself in a Star Wars universe that features both new and returning characters through a variety of dialogue and action gameplay to determine the course of the story. Kevin Bruner, Founder of Dramatic Labs said:

As fans of Star Trek, it’s truly an honor to be crafting a story which puts players right in the heart of the action, where significant choices and decisions will affect the entire narrative. Built from the ground up using Epic’s Unreal engine and our proprietary narrative engine, this game showcases our team’s evolution in creating thought-provoking story-rich adventures.

The developer comprises of seasoned industry veterans which include former developers from Telltale Games. They have worked previously on titles such as The Walking Dead: The Telltale Series, The Wolf Among Us, Game of Thrones: The Telltale Series, and Batman: The Telltale Series. The team includes Andrew Grant, former Lead Writer and Creative Director at Telltale; Dan Martin, former Lead Writer at Telltale; Kent Mudle, former Cinematic Director and Creative Director at Telltale; and Brett Tosti, former Executive Producer and Creative Director at Telltale.

Lourdes Arocho, Senior Vice President, Paramount Pictures Licensing, Global Games and Publishing, ViacomCBS Consumer Products also said:

We’re thrilled to be working with the team at Dramatic Labs on an exciting new adventure in the Star Trek franchise. Players will boldly set forth into this new adventure, meeting familiar characters and new cultures, while interacting with them in profound and impactful ways. This game will challenge players to make those similar tough choices that iconic Star Trek heroes have been forced to contend with.

The developer did not share many details about the game at this point however we can expect additional details about the game to drop in the coming months including a potential release date. At this point, the developer is aiming for a Spring 2022 release for PS5, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC exclusively via Epic Games Store.
