Sony has reported that they have sold more than 91 million console units of the PlayStation 4 before the end of the fiscal year ending March 2019. The next target they are looking for is set at 100 million consoles sold for the next fiscal year.
Sony confirmed that just in the holiday season there were 5.6 million PS4 consoles sold worldwide, pushing the overall figure to 91.6 million units since the console was introduced in late 2013. Though this number is not that big, it is still substantial considering it is the console’s fifth year.
But the good news was not limited to PS4 consoles, as games were also quite popular with PS4 owners. The report adds that, “More than 50.7 million PS4 games were sold through globally during the 2018 holiday season, which sums up to 876 million PS4 games cumulatively sold through worldwide.”
This was also boost by the Sony exclusive games that were released last year. Namely God of War and Marvels Spider-Man, where the former has now reached over 9 million copies sold to consumers both physical and digital.
John Kodera, who is the president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, repeated the system sales numbers in a press statement, then talked about its online membership.
We are also happy to announce that the monthly active users of PlayStation Network continues to show strong growth, and has surpassed 90 million as of (the) end of November 2018. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to our passionate community around the globe, and our partners, for helping us achieve these milestones.
This year, we will bring more enhanced experiences to our fans along with a highly anticipated lineup of games that are only possible on PS4. As we look towards the next PS4 milestone, SIE will continue to evolve, and we will further expand the platform to deliver the best interactive experiences to the world.
Sony is comfortable ahead in the number of consoles sold compared to its competitors, and with more exclusive games coming out this year on the PlayStation 4, it seems that the number are only going to go higher. Perhaps hitting 100 million is not far off, and Sony might even hit the target by late spring this year.
