SEGA Europe has announced its brand-new ambitious multi-platform multiplayer shooter called HYENAS currently under development at Creative Assembly. HYENAS will be the latest multiplayer shooter to enter the genre which is currently dominated by some of the biggest franchises. HYENAS is set in a broken world where the billionaires have all fled to Mars and have left Earth and the tax bills far behind. The zero-gravity tech powering their journey shattered the planet Earth and has abandoned everyone else in a drifting slum called the Taint. With people now living on the planet Mars, the elite are now interested in collecting rare ‘Merch’ which is pop culture swag from the lives they left behind on the planet Earth. This Merch is looted from Earth only to be displayed in their mansions in Mars however it is not that simple.
The HYENAS are groups of people who want to steal the Merch back from them and they are mostly a crew of ragtag cast of uniquely skilled and armed criminal misfits. The Merch is transported back to Mars in huge, towering lumbering spaceships called Plunderships that are packed with hired thugs, alarm systems and armed drones and it is the job of HYENAS to infiltrate these Plunderships and get away with the Merch. Each game will see you and three other players trying to steal Merch while competing against four other crews on the same Plundership.
To succeed in the game, you will need both guns and guile in each level which is a sandbox playground of interlocking systems, creating endless opportunities for each team to exploit the environment, security networks, hired goons and more. The gameplay will also feature blisteringly quick movement and lethal combat mechanics, which is often switchable, zero-G-zones and more. Executive Producer, David Nicholson commented:
We believe the key to modern shooter success is understanding what players want to see and where they want to take their experience. We know we’ve got something interesting on our hands, but we also know the odds are stacked against us. To take on the biggest games in the industry, we need to hear what players think, right up front and early. If you’re in, we want to take you along for the ride. That’s why after today’s announcement, we’re also launching into the first of our public Alpha tests.
Creative Assembly is one of the best studios currently working under the SEGA’s umbrella and we can surely hope that they will be giving their best at developing HYENAS. The online multiplayer shooter genre is currently one of the toughest genres to break into and only time will tell how Creative Assembly manages to do it. Creative Assembly’s previous release was Alien: Isolation, a horror title that won the hearts of horror fans all around the world. At this point, there are not a lot of details known about the title however we got to know some of the interesting bits about the game.
For one, HYENAS will be free of all sorts of microtransactions. It will also include Panini sticker albums and a SEGA Mega Drive and PEZ dispensers. You can currently sign up for the alpha at the official game website however there is no word on a release date yet however it will release on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4 and PC in 2023.
