Frontier Developments has released the first deep dive in its new Feature Focus series for Planet Zoo 2, spotlighting the West African Lion and the animal behaviors and welfare systems built around it in the upcoming zoo simulator.
The deep dive features two lions, lioness Zuri and bachelor Tao, and the developer uses them to walk through how deeply Planet Zoo 2’s animal simulation goes this time around. West African Lions get singled out here specifically for their distinct social and behavioral quirks compared to other lion populations, giving Frontier a natural entry point into showing off the game’s broader animal systems.
The new deep dive video also showcases the game’s new emotion system. Rather than animals simply existing in a habitat, they now shift between visible moods depending on how well they’re actually being cared for. Habitat quality plays directly into this as different factors like enrichment, food access, and clean drinking water all contribute to how an animal behaves day to day.
Neglect that, and animals start showing it: sluggish movement, low energy, and a noticeably narrower range of natural behaviors. Get it right, though, and animals become more active and expressive, engaging in a wider variety of natural behaviors that reflect genuine wellbeing rather than just idle animations.
It’s a system that pushes Planet Zoo 2 further toward simulation depth over surface-level zoo management, tying player care decisions directly to visible, moment-to-moment animal behavior instead of abstracted stats hidden in a menu. For a series built around the tension between running a business and properly caring for animals, it’s a meaningful step. Welfare isn’t just a number ticking up or down anymore; it’s something players can actually watch play out.
This is just the first entry in what Frontier is positioning as an ongoing series, with the Feature Focus format apparently built to spotlight specific animals and systems one at a time rather than dumping everything into a single trailer. That suggests more of these are coming as launch approaches, likely to cover other animals and mechanics the studio wants to highlight individually.
Planet Zoo 2 is slated for release on PC via Steam, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. The Standard Edition carries a suggested retail price of $49.99, while the Deluxe Edition is priced at $64.99.
