THQ Nordic is back at it again, this time it has acquired another developer known for games like Risen, Elex and Gothic. Piranha Bytes is a German developer that was best known for its role-playing games, and now it has been acquired by THQ Nordic.
No details regarding the terms of the deal were shared by either THQ Nordic nor Piranha Bytes. However, THQ said that the cost is the same as “three years of what management’s estimated royalty payments to Piranha for upcoming titles would have been if the acquisition had not occurred.”
All of us here at THQ Nordic welcome every single member of the Piranha Bytes team to our family. We already had our fair share of laughter (well, every time we meet in person), fun (conventions, Christmas- and Summer parties, or karaoke singing), tears (when the wrong person hits the karaoke stage), and sweat (Batman cosplay @Gamescom 2018 comes to mind) together, and from now on it is in an officially joint capacity as well.
THQ Nordic also adds the studio will remain independent and continue to make RPGs. Currently, there are 31 employees at Piranha Bytes, and it seems that even after the acquisition there won’t be many changes while the team would still work on future RPGs with THQ Nordic publishing.
We look forward bringing Piranha team into the family, which has received legendary status across the RPG community as their fanbase cherishes their current games and eagerly anticipates their new titles in the future
The latest game by Piranha Bytes was Elex, and it was published by THQ Nordic back in 2017. During the acquisition announcement, Piranha Bytes also sort-of announced that their next project would be Elex 2.
When THQ went bankrupt back in 2013, most of its assets were acquired by Nordic, including Darksiders and Red Faction franchises. The company was then rebranded as THQ Nordic in 2016, while moving its main studio to Sweden. Since then, it has gone on to acquire many studios acquiring a big library of games and IPs.
