Developer Grinding Gear Games has announced that the next major Path of Exile 2 update, titled Return of the Ancients, will be fully revealed during a GGG Live broadcast on May 7, 1 PM PDT. The presentation will stream on the official Path of Exile Twitch and YouTube channels and will focus on new endgame content, major gameplay additions, and broader changes planned for the action RPG.
According to the studio, the update introduces a massive fortress stretching across continents that has appeared in Wraeclast, serving as the central setting for the new content. Players will explore the structure, uncover its mysteries, and face new large-scale challenges tied to the game’s evolving endgame systems. Grinding Gear Games says the reveal will place particular emphasis on a revamped endgame experience, which has remained one of the most closely watched areas of Path of Exile 2 since early access began.
Following the main presentation, content creator ZiggyD will host a developer Q&A with game directors Jonathan Rogers and Mark Roberts, where further details on the update are expected to be discussed.
Path of Exile 2 is the second title of the Path of Exile franchise, expanding the original game’s dark fantasy world with a new campaign, redesigned combat systems, and overhauled progression while still maintaining the deep build customization and seasonal content structure the series is known for. Since the original Path of Exile launched in 2013, it has established itself as one of the most prominent free-to-play action RPGs in the genre, often positioned alongside franchises like Diablo for its complex skill systems and large-scale league-based updates.
Its previous major update focused on expanding endgame progression and league content, continuing Grinding Gear Games’ long-standing approach of treating each expansion as a substantial gameplay refresh rather than a minor content patch. These updates often reshape how players approach character progression, boss encounters, and long-term seasonal play, making each reveal a significant moment for the community.
Path of Exile 2: Return of the Ancients will be fully unveiled on May 8 through GGG Live on the official Path of Exile channels. Last year, the developers released the massive Dawn of the Hunt expansion with the new Huntress Class, new Ascendancies, and tons of other content. Path of Exile 2 is currently available on PC via Steam.
