Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection Update Adds Cross-Platform Play and 2v2 Online Modes

Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection Cross-play

Digital Eclipse and Atari have released a major update for Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection, introducing cross-platform play alongside new online features and technical improvements. The update is now live, with Krossplay support live across all platforms apart from Nintendo Switch.

Krossplay, Mortal Kombat’s term for crossplay, allows players across PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo platforms, and PC to compete against each other in both Quick Play and Online Arcade modes. The feature expands the game’s online ecosystem by removing platform barriers, while integration with the existing Room Code system makes it easier to connect with friends or join specific matches within the broader community.

The update also introduces 2v2 online matches, bringing tag-team gameplay to several classic entries included in the collection. This mode is available in Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 (Arcade and SNES versions), Mortal Kombat Trilogy (PlayStation), and Mortal Kombat 4 (Arcade), marking the first time this format has been supported online within the collection. The addition builds on the compilation’s focus on preserving and modernizing legacy titles by extending their multiplayer functionality.

On the technical side, Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support has been added across multiple platforms, including PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. This option allows gameplay to better align with original arcade frame pacing, offering a smoother and more authentic experience, particularly for players using compatible displays. VRR support is also available on newer hardware, such as Nintendo Switch 2 in handheld mode.

Additional updates include the ability to select stages before online matches, fixes for matchmaking settings, improvements to replay management, and updated localization across supported languages. According to the developers, this release represents the final major feature update for Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection, though smaller fixes and refinements are expected to continue based on community feedback.

Detailed patch notes are listed below:

  • Krossplay now enables players across all platforms to play online with other MK fans. PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, and PC gamers can now meet and play in the same online lobbies or Quick Play sessions. (Note: Due to technical limitations, Mortal Kombat Trilogy is not available for online Krossplay matches when playing on original Switch consoles.)
  • The 2-on-2 modes featured in Ultimate MK3 (Arcade), Ultimate MK3 (SNES), Mortal Kombat Trilogy (PS1), and Mortal Kombat 4 (Arcade) are now available for online play. These modes are designated with the words “2 on 2” when they are played in online rooms.
