Diablo 2 Remaster Might be in Development for Release This Year

Diablo 2 Remaster

According to a rumor, Diablo 2 Remaster is in development by Vicarious Visions and might be releasing sometime this year. The developer is a subsidiary of Activision and is known for remastering titles such as the Crash Bandicoot: Nitro-Fueled.

A report by a French news website ActuGaming states that the game will be called Diablo 2 Resurrected and will launch in the last quarter of 2020. ActuGaming is no stranger to posting correct news as it previously predicted announced for Diablo 4, Overwatch 2, and World of Warcraft: Shadowlands.

This sure does come as a surprise, as the creator of the series revealed last year that they have lost all the source code for Diablo 2. Co-creators Max Schaefer, Erich Schaefer, and David Brevik talked about the assets being lost during the ExilCon 2019 event.

Not just our code, but all of our assets. Irrevocably, fatally corrupted. It’s all gone. We were supposed to have a backup but neglected it. We spent a day or two in sheer panic. It would make it very difficult for Blizzard to do a Diablo 2 remaster because all the assets we used are pretty much gone, They’d have to make them from scratch.

The team went on to complete the game by taking every little builds and sections they could recover. As for the new rumor that is going around about the remaster of the title, we still need any official confirmation. If the rumor stands true about the game releasing this year, we might get some sort of game reveal this summer at least.

Last year, Blizzard announced Diablo 4 along with Overwatch 2 at the BlizzCon 2019 event the announcement also came with a reveal trailer you can check out below:
