Respawn Entertainment has worked on an interesting way to take on cheaters plaguing its battle royale game Apex Legends. Players who use cheating mechanics or any such software will be pitted together in a match featuring other cheaters and spam accounts.
Respawn has been working on eliminating cheaters from Apex Legends since its launch back in February. The developer has added many things from reporting to permanently banning accounts that use cheat hacks or aimbots.
The studio has now revealed its new anti-cheating efforts that will include matchmaking between any cheating and spam accounts. This way they can get a taste of their own medicine when their hacks and aimbots will not be so much fun if they play against similar dirty players.
As we’ve said before, the war against cheaters will be ongoing and remains a high priority for us. There will always be work to do, improvements to make, and new things to adapt to. We’d like to thank the players that have been getting involved with helping us squash cheaters over the last week whether it be submitting reports or assisting with the vetting process for suspicious behavior
This is not the only thing Respawn has been working on, the studio also working on an AI that can detect any cheaters and automatically ban them. This system will be able to ban spam accounts before they are used and would require a two-factor authentication in regions of high-risk users. In addition, developers also want to target players who actively play with cheaters for their own advantage.
Identifying cheaters and pitting them together in the game sure sounds like an inventive way to discourage players. However, it does raise the question about false flags potentially adding innocent players in a cheater filled round. So it is yet to be seen how the system will actually work, how the cheaters would be discouraged by it, or if they can find a way to bypass the system.
Since the new cheating system is still new, Respawn will gather information over the course of months and work on countering any new ways the cheaters can work on.
