Rockstar Games has confirmed that pre-orders for Grand Theft Auto VI will officially open on June 25, available through digital storefronts and select physical retailers. The announcement arrived alongside the reveal of the game’s official cover art, with Rockstar inviting fans to add the game to their wishlist on the PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store to get notified once pre-orders go live. Pricing has not been confirmed yet, though it’s expected to be revealed alongside the pre-order window opening.
GTA 6 is launching exclusively on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with no PC version confirmed at this stage, following two delays from its originally planned 2025 release. The game is now locked in for November 19, 2026.
The wait for GTA 6 has been a long one by the franchise’s standards. Grand Theft Auto VI follows Grand Theft Auto V, which launched back in 2013, meaning the gap between mainline entries will stretch to roughly 13 years by the time GTA 6 arrives, by far the longest gap in the series’ history. For context, GTA 5 itself launched five years after GTA 4, which at the time felt like an unusually long wait. Rockstar has spent much of that period supporting GTA 5 and GTA Online, which is part of why anticipation for a true successor has built to such an extreme degree. GTA 5 has also managed to cover three console generations.
What we do know about the game itself centers on its setting and protagonists. GTA 6 takes place in the fictional state of Leonida, based on Florida, and follows a criminal couple: Jason Duval, who worked for local drug runners in the Leonida Keys after serving in the Army, and Lucia Caminos, the series’ first non-optional female protagonist, who was imprisoned at Leonida Penitentiary after fighting for her family. The story follows the pair after a failed bank heist pulls them into a state-wide conspiracy, forcing them to protect each other as things spiral out of control.
Leonida itself includes Vice City along with the Grassrivers, Leonida Keys, Ambrosia, Mount Kalaga National Park, and Port Gellhorn, drawing on Florida’s geography, from Miami to the Everglades. The map is estimated to be nearly twice the size of GTA 5’s world, with over 700 enterable interiors. The world also leans into satire of 2020s American culture, aiming at social media and influencer culture alongside modern policing tools like body cameras.
Rockstar has confirmed reworked combat and stealth systems, including prone crawling, zip ties, and human shields, along with a more nuanced wanted system, advanced graphics featuring ray-traced lighting and strand-based hair physics, and a vehicle roster of over 200 cars, motorcycles, planes, and boats with interactive interiors. Supporting characters confirmed so far include Cal Hampton, Jason’s paranoid friend; Boobie Ike; record label owner Dre’Quan Priest; musical duo Real Dimez; bank robber Raul Bautista; and Brian Heder, Jason’s landlord and a longtime drug runner.
With pre-orders confirmed and pricing expected soon, all signs point to GTA 6 staying on track for its November 19 launch. It is currently slated for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only.
