Publisher Clear River Games and developer Tatsujin have announced a brand-new title in the iconic Truxton franchise, Truxton Extreme, for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. Tatsujin is a Japanese studio led by none other than Masahiro Yuge, one of the founders of the arcade games studio TOAPLAN, and is known for playing a major role in the development of some of the studio’s shoot ‘em up titles.
Truxton was originally released back in 1988 for Japanese, American, and European arcade machines. The Western release of the game was delayed one year after its original release. The Japanese release was managed by Taito while Midway handled the US publication. It came from a studio that was previously known for titles like Jongo, Slap Fight, and Flying Shark.
Truxton Extreme Announced for PC and Consoles
Truxton Extreme marks the return of the classic franchise to modern platforms after nearly 38 years. It brings the classic vertical-scrolling shooting action back to life, now fully rendered in 3D with reimagined tracks from the 1988 title to create brand-new music for it. It will feature 18 story chapters filled with arcade action, and the narrative will be in the form of comic book-style storytelling by artist Junya Inoue, also formerly of TOAPLAN. The game will put players in the shoes of characters like Ash, Bergamot, and Cyrilla, who have sworn to protect Earth.
The game will feature multiple game modes at launch, including:
- Story – Combining action and comics, Story Mode takes players through the main game of Truxton Extreme to unlock episodes, read comics, and clear shmup stages.
- Arcade – In true arcade style, Arcade Mode is pure, unrelenting action in which players clear all stages in sequence.
- Heart Starter – A more forgiving mode, Heart Starter is recommended for beginners to get used to the game. Players will recover from enemy hits in a few seconds and won’t lose lives, even if they make mistakes.
- Team – Take on the Geranium invasion together! Team Mode allows two-player co-op, sharing their bombs, their lives, and their scores. Players can rescue each other, too.
- Arena – A 2-minute time trial, Arena Mode sets the challenge of defeating as many enemies as possible to get the highest score.
- Pipiruville – Defeat enemies during the game to rescue Pipiru aliens, keep at it, and players will unlock Pipiruville and develop their village.
Truxton Extreme will be released in two separate versions. The Standard Edition will include the base game, while the Deluxe Edition will include additional goodies. The Truxton Extreme Thunder Master Edition is also in the pipeline for the most diehard fans of the franchise. This special edition will include a special box, an O-sleeve, an A5 hardcover art book, an A5 manga-style softcover manga, an original soundtrack on a 2-disc CD jewel case, and a lenticular card showing a skull-bomb. Additionally, early buyers will also be able to snag a Thunder Master Edition-exclusive Pipiru Plushie for a limited time.
Truxton Extreme is slated for release on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam and GOG. The Standard Edition of the game will cost $24.99, while the Digital Deluxe Edition will cost $29.99. The physical Standard Edition for Nintendo Switch 2 will cost $49.99, while the PS5 and Xbox versions will cost $39.99.
