EA has announced that it will pull the plug on a number of older Need for Speed titles. Along with pulling them from sale across all digital stores, the online servers for these games will also be shut down rendering players unable to join online lobbies in these titles. As of now, EA has detailed five NFS titles that will be removed from stores and their online servers shutting down soon as well. These titles include:
- Need for Speed Carbon
- Need for Speed Undercover
- Need for Speed Shift
- Need for Speed Shift 2: Unleashed
- Need for Speed The Run
These give titles have been removed from stores across all of their platforms and this means that their in-game stores have also been shut down so players will not be able to purchase their DLCs from in-game stores as well. With their digital sales stopped, the online services will continue to run until August 31, 2021, and only after that, the servers will shut down completely and players can only access offline modes for these games.
This was announced by Community Manager Max_Joker on Reddit where he detailed:
The development teams and operational staff have put a lot of time and passion into the development, creation, release and upkeep of the game over the years, and we love to see you play. But the number of players has come to a point where it’s no longer feasible to continue the work behind the scenes required to keep Need for Speed Carbon, Need for Speed Undercover, Need for Speed Shift, Need for Speed Shift 2: Unleashed and Need for Speed The Run up and running.
The decision is certainly sudden and if you consider even the latest release on this list, it is more than a decade old so at this point, nearly all fans would have played the game or at least added them to their digital libraries. If these titles are already in your libraries, you will be able to play them offline without any issues. Currently, only Need for Speed Shift and Need for Speed Undercover are left on Steam so if you want to add them, you must hurry up and buy them to add them to your account. We are not getting any new NFS this year as well since Criterion is helping in Battlefield 6 development.
