NPD has released their December 2018 report and it shows that Nintendo Switch was the best-selling console in 2018 as it outsold PS4 in USA.
The report also shows that Nintendo Switch has beaten the record of highest sales in terms of both units sold and dollar sales of any hardware platform. This record was previously held by PS4 which had beaten the record back in 2015.
The massive surge in Nintendo Switch’s sales happened in the last two months of 2018. Before November, PS4 was clearly in the lead according to NPD reports but in November, Nintendo Switch finally overtook PS4 and maintained the lead until the end of 2018.
According to report, Nintendo Switch also broke its own record of highest dollar sales for a single platform in December. The previous record was held by Nintendo Wii which set the record in 2009 and 2010 when it hit the maximum amount of dollar sales and units sold respectively.
The massive boost to Nintendo Switch could be credited to Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu!, Eevee! and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate coming out right in the time of launch. Both titles are highly sought out by fans and this ultimately led to increased holiday sales of the Nintendo Switch console.
Nintendo Switch’s local co-op and family friendly environment is also one of the biggest reasons behind its huge sale amounts. Technically it lacks behind both Xbox One and PS4 however it offers some of the best video games for family entertainment and fun local co-op parties.
Nintendo Switch clearly shows that overly powerful hardware and immensely visual details are not the key selling points as it has been beating its much more powerful competitors in nearly every category since its launch.
Apart from hardware, Red Dead Redemption 2 was the bestselling video game of 2018 where it beat Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 and many other amazing titles that were launched in 2018. If you consider only the month of December, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was the highest selling game which does not surprise us.
