Super Smash Bros Ultimate Zero Suit Samus Guide

Below, we have listed all the attacks that are specific and special to Zero Suit Samus. Refer to each attack for a better understanding of how Zero Suit Samus combats in the stage.

Introduction

Zero Suit Samus is one of the fastest fighters in the game, only beaten slightly by Captain Falcon in speed. Not only can her move sets boast speed, but her vulnerability window is relatively short, which makes it hard to land a good shot on her. The fact that she is hard to hit allows players to take risks with her in bringing her closer to the opponent to land a good few combos.

Her greatest strengths revolve around juggling and forcing out mistakes while aggressively pursuing airborne enemies. She excels at baiting out bad air dodges and punishing them with her exceedingly quick attacks, especially since many of her specials and attacks synergize and sequence well together.

Zero can also grab onto ledges with her Plasma Whip; however, this can only be done three times. The fourth attempt will break her grip when the whip bounces off the edge, causing Zero to fall as a knock-out.

Ground Attacks

This section of the guide contains all the grounded attacks that Zero Suit Samus can perform while on the stage.

Neutral Attacks

Zero Suit Samus has 3 neutral attacks. The first two attacks deal 1.5 damage, while the third deals 3 damage and will knock away the opponent.

Zero has the fastest jab in the game, which is where her neutral attack can be of some value compared to other characters in the game. If your quick neutral attacks generally beat your opponent’s grab attempt, you can force the opponent to shield one of your smash or tilt attacks, and more often than not, you can beat them to the punch with a neutral attack to follow up.

Smashes

Zero Suit Samus has three smash attacks.

Side Smash

The Side Smash of Zero can deal 5, 11 damage to enemies, which can knock them away and can be angled up or down. This Side Smash attack is a double roundhouse attack to the enemyโ€™s midsection that sends them flying away. By angling the attack slightly up or down, it can be effective in altering its effective hitbox.

Up Smash

This smash deals 4, 0.8×5, and 3 damage to the opponent. Up smash is a strong anti-air for challenging descending enemies, zoning them out with Zeroโ€™s powerful whip attack. You can usually get a guaranteed follow-up air attack after launching the enemy with the up smash, as the whip sends them directly above and slightly behind you at an angle.

Down Smash

The down smash deals 8 damage, where Zero fires her blaster at the ground in front of her, causing a sizeable area of effect burst that stuns and knocks up does caught in its blast radius. This smash is also an excellent setup for juggling and setting up combos.

Additionally, a down smash can also be followed up into a forward smash for a kill combo. Either way, down smash is a superb edge-guarding tool to threaten recovering foes or to punish them just as they grab onto the ledge.

The only drawback of down smash is that it can leave you susceptible to attacks if you miss with it.

Defensive Attacks

Zero Suit Samus has 2 Defensive Attacks. The Ledge Attack can deal 9 damage, while the Wake-up Attack deals 7 damage.

Tilts

Zero Suit Samus has three Tilt Attacks.

Side Tilt

This tilt attack will deal 7 damage, where Zero delivers a staggering roundhouse kick at the opponent. While this tilt covers a decent horizontal range, it should be used carefully as Zero has many more effective tools to fill the same role. The primary use of the side tilt attack is to check for enemy aggression. For instance, after the opponent shields one of your paralyzer shots, you can stick out to side tilt to stuff incoming retaliatory dashes.

Up Tilt

This tilt attack will deal 5, 7 damage. With this attack, Zero quickly performs a handstand spin kick that strikes nearby enemies both in front and behind her. This is a fast-paced attack, even more so than other characters’ neutral attacks, but it is considerably unsafe on block, so while this tilt is quick and decently sets up your offense on hit, you can be punished if you are too predictable with your retaliation attempts.

Down Tilt

This tilt attack will deal 8 damage, where Zero sinks low to the ground and sweeps the opponent’s feet. Down tilt pops enemies up in the air on hit, allowing for many combo opportunities. The down tilt also has a long reach, and if spaced correctly, you can get a guaranteed combo with a follow-up dashing hop forward air attack.

Grabs

Zero Suit Samus has 5 grab attacks. The Grab Attack deals 1.3 damage. The Front Throw and Back Throw both deal 5 damage and set up knockdown and combo situations. The Up Throw deals 6 damage and launches the opponent up in the air. And finally, the Down Throw deals 5 damage and also launches the opponent up in the air, but sets you up for a potential follow-up with combos.

Aerial Attacks

This section of the guide will cover all the Aerial attacks that Zero Suit Samus has.

Neutral Air Attack

This attack deals 8 damage where Zero cracks her electrified whip through the air, striking enemies in front and behind her. This attack is the best spacing tool because of its effective range. Neutral air attacks are one of your staple combo starters and poke attacks. Your effective distance revolves around your neutral air whip, and you want to keep the spacing in mind when attacking.

Forward Air Attack

This attack deals 5, 7 damage, where zero delivers two quick horizontal kicks in succession, knocking opponents away.

Back Air Attack

This attack deals 12 damage, where Zero delivers an aerial rear roundhouse kick. Back air attack is also your main edge-guarding tool for keeping recovering opponents far from the ledge. It is also a decent, safe knockout tool, so it’s best to use this when you chase down high-percentage opponents.

Up Air Attack

This attack deals 6.5 damage, where Zero delivers a somersault kick, taking down airborne enemies directly above. You can use this once you gain an aerial position advantage, keeping your opponent guessing as you continuously keep your somersault attacks on them.

Down Air Attack

This attack deals 5 damage, where Zero commits to a powerful downward thrust, launching herself from any altitude down a specific trajectory until she makes contact with a platform. However, you have no control over your trajectory once you have committed to this attack.

Special Moves

Zero Suit Samus has 4 special moves. All of them are detailed below.

Neutral Special โ€“ Paralyzer

This special attack can deal 4, 6 (Max) damage, where Zero fires an energy blast that stuns opponents. At maximum charge, the blast range, power, and stun are enhanced. Paralyzer is incredibly powerful and a good setup for combo opportunities ,as this attack stuns the opponent for a short time

Side Special โ€“ Plasma Whip

This special attack can deal 1.2×4, 8 damage, where Zero snaps at her enemy with her electrified energy whip. The whip can also be used to grab onto a ledge. This special attack deals a very large amount of damage; however, it is the slowest attack Zero Suit Samus has.

Up Special โ€“ Boost Kick

This special attack can deal 5, 1.3×5, 4 damage, where Zero launches herself into the air with a multi-hit strike, ending with a spin kick that launches her victim. When chasing airborne enemies with the Boost Kick, make sure to transition to fast fall on whiff to limit your vulnerability. This special attack is also a decent out-of-shield attack.

Down Special โ€“ Flip Jump

This special attack can deal 8 damage when hit by Head Stomp, and 14 damage when it is hit by Flip Cancel Kick. In this attack, Zero flips through the air, and if she successfully lands on the opponent, she digs her heels in and buries the opponent in the ground, leaving them vulnerable to more combo attacks.

Flip Jump also causes uncertainty in your opponent’s mind, as the landing of the kick is unpredictable, and will keep them guessing where you will land.  Flip Jumps can be cancelled with a transitional heavy stomp by pressing attack or special during the flip; it will leave Zero vulnerable, as the ending landing lag is severe.

Final Smash โ€“ Zero Laser

Once the meter is full, Zero Suit Samus rides her gunship and aims its laser cannon through a targeting reticle. When fired, the laser hits consecutively and deals massive damage to your opponent. It then finishes with one last energy blast that launches opponents.
