Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Richter/Simon Guide

Below we have listed all the attacks that are specific and special to Richter and Simon. Refer to each attack for a better understanding of how both Belmont brother combat in the stage.

Introduction

The Belmont brothers have been added in the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, where Simon Belmont is the legendary vampire hunter, and Richter is his Echo Fighter, sharing the same moves and strengths.

The Belmont brothers have incredible reach with their whip-swinging attacks, and powerful knockback power. However, due to the slow lengthy windup of the whip, the brothers tend to hit slower than most other fighters.

You can best fight with the Belmont brothers if you effectively use their unique special moves and whip swinging range to keep opponents at bay, warding them away from point blank range by tossing items like Holy Water, Axes, and Crosses.

Grounded Attacks

This section of the guide contains all the grounded attacks that the Belmont brothers can perform while on the stage.

Neutral Attacks

The Belmont brothers have 3 Neutral attacks. The first is a close range whip that deals 2 damage, while another hit also deals 2 damage. After the first two neutral attacks, the third attack input leads to the rapid fire capper, a spinning whip attach that ends by launching the victim a short distance away dealing 1.5 damage.

Defensive Attacks

The Belmont brothers have 3 defensive attacks. The Ledge attack deals 9 damage, while the Wake-up attack deals 7 damage.

Dash Attack

This attack deals 1.7×5, 3.5 damage, where the Belmonts spin their whip in a tight circle alongside, hitting enemies in all directions while moving forward. The spinning whip effectively covers the whole body of either of the Belmonts.

Smashes

Belmont brothers have three smash attacks.

Side Smash

This attack deals 18 to 25.2 damage, where the Belmonts produce a far reaching whip attack that deals high damage and knockback enemies if hit at the tip of the whip. This attack is slow to start up, so it is best to use when you are far as possible from opponents, otherwise you will be left totally vulnerable.

Up Smash

This attack deals 16 to 22.4 damage. In this attack, the Belmonts whip straight up in the air for a far reaching vertical strike. This attack works best for airborne enemies, but requires precision. This is understandably so because of the whip being a thin object.

This is why you should be careful when trying to hit enemies above with this attack, as it is extremely risky to use a slow up smash attack and miss, which might result in the opponent landing right next to the Belmonts, while they are still lagging from the attack.

Down Smash

This attack deals 16 to 22.4 damage. In this attack, the whip is targeted at the opponents toes, but the attack begins in the front then spins around to repeat the hit to the back. This covers both angles in front and behind, and makes this attack the Belmonts most reliable option

Tilts

Belmont brothers have three Tilt Attacks.

Side Tilt

This attack deals 12 damage, where either of the Belmonts whips straight forward with an average distance covering attack. The damage is higher at the tip of the whip and lower if used against close range opponents.

This attack is slow to begin, which makes them vulnerable.

Up Tilt

This attack deals 10 damage, where the Belmonts swing the whip above their heads, covering the space above them. This attack is a great anti-air or when juggling tumbling targets.

The attack if hit, pops the enemy in the air, allowing you to go for a combo. You can go for an Up Special attack to follow after you have popped the enemy in the air.

Down Tilt 1

There are two versions of this attack, where the Belmonts produce a fast forward moving slide kick that deals 5 damage. The slide kick can be transitioned to a vault kick if you press the attack button once again. This leaping vault kick deals 7 damage, which is more than the normal slide kick.

Sliding into an opponent with the slide kick before transitioning to the vault kick will score a two hit combo while popping a victim up.

Grabs

The Belmont brothers have 5 Grab attacks. The first grab deals 1.3 damage. The Front and Back throw deal 7 damage each. The Up throw deals 6, 4 damage, and the Down throw deals 8 damage.

Belmonts have very slow grab attempts compared to most brawlers in the game, taking twice as long. And their reach is nothing to boast either, where you will find that you will have to rush forward to grab the opponent.

Front and back throw are great for tossing an enemy toward one edge or the other intentionally, especially when they have high damage built up. Down throw bounces them forward off the ground, serving as a different kind of front throw that you can follow with an immediate down tilt into vault kick for an extra hit. From up throw, juggle follow-ups are possible, like jumping into up air or Uppercut (up special), or staying on the ground and shooting with up smash

Aerial Attacks

This section of the guide will cover all the Aerial attacks that Belmont brothers have.

Neutral Air Attack

This attack deals 1×6, 4 damage. Either of the brothers spins their whip in a tight wheel where the hitboxes are shaped like an X around the fighter.

This attack has a lengthy active period, which means you can jump on your opponent and activate this attack and land on your opponent. This attack lasts so long that this works against standing opponents even if you double jump above them first.

Forward and Back Air Attack

This attack deals 12 damage. Simon and Richter use a long-range whip swing, like side tilt on the ground. Also like side tilt, this is below average in speed for an attack of its kind, but more than makes up for it with huge range and knockback potential.

Up Air Attack

This attack deals 12 damage. In this attack, either of the Belmont brother lash out straight up with an aerial whip swing. This is a lot like up smash on the ground, but far less vulnerable, if only because you can steer in midair or perform other actions afterward, instead of being stuck on the ground during recovery lag on up smash. On top of that, performing a short-hopping up air attack (easily done with up on the control stick plus the Attack and Jump inputs at once) actually hits straight up a tiny bit faster than an uncharged up smash, and with more reach.

Down Air Attack

This attack deals 7 damage. Simon or Richter halts aerial movement entirely for a second, gathering tension, before rocketing down-forward with a dive kick. On contact, whether hit or shielded, Belmont bounces off like he’s hit a trampoline. From the bounce, Belmont is simply back to an airborne state, and can perform any air actions as normal, even using down air attacks back-to-back for repeated dive kicks.

Special Moves

Belmont brothers have 4 special moves. All of them are detailed below.

Neutral Special – Axe

This attack deals 15 damage. Either of the Belmonts hurl a heavy Axe towards the opponent. These projectiles can travel through obstacles, making this an effective weapon for opponents on platforms above or below you. In addition, you can also throw more than one Axe at a time.

Side Special – Cross

This attack deals 6 to 8 damage. In this attack, the Belmonts throw the Cross alone with variable speed and power. This special weapon goes spinning along a straight path, eventually slowing before reversing and traveling in the direction it was thrown from. The Cross continues until it either leaves the screen or comes back in contact with the fighter that threw it in the first place.

Up Special – Uppercut

This attack deals 2, 1.5×4, 6 damage. In this attack, either of the Belmonts produce an uppercut punch that hits very heavily with a little period of intangibility around the first striking frame. After the strike, the fighter travels upward for a moment, launched the opponent lofted upward too, before transitioning into the finishing multi hit part of the move.

Down Special – Holy Water

This attack deals 2.4 to 2.8, 1.4×8 damage. In this attack, the Belmonts toss a vial filled with Holy Water. Once the vial shatters, it spills out the water that turns into an explosive liquid over a small radius, dealing damage to anyone caught within.

Simon Holy water comes out in red flames, while Richter’s are an icy blue color.

Only one vial can be activated at a time, but it leaves you options to follow the attack up with combos, likely the Special Uppercut move.

Another thing to keep in mind is that there is no direction input to throw the vial of Holy Water. The vial is thrown wherever the fighter is facing, so make sure you have the Belmonts facing the right way

Final Smash – Grand Cross

In the final smash attack, the Belmonts produce an attack that brings out Dracula coffins midsreen that opens wide and sucks anyone nearby within a big radius. In this coffin trap, multiple enemies can be swallowed and given heavy damage while trapped inside.

  1. Only thing that bugs me about this guide is that they are referred to as the “Belmont brothers”. I would ignore this if it were only referenced once or twice but seeing it every couple of sentences bugs me. Richter is an ancestor of Simon.
