Romero Games is Not Dead…Yet

Romero Games

Back on July 3rd, Romero Games announced that the development fund of their upcoming title was pulled by the publisher, and the team is halting production on the development for the time being. This quickly led to different outlets reporting that the studio itself was being shuttered; however, this is not the case. In another statement shared recently, the studio has announced that the studio is not shut down and only the funding for their game was canceled, which also means that the game is not officially terminated as of now.

In the most recent statement, Romero Games clearly mentions that they cannot reveal the name of the publisher due to confidentiality agreements however, since we all know when the news came out to the public, it was Microsoft. Microsoft laid off tons of employees and closed down different titles across the board and one of them was Romero Games’ upcoming title as well. However, all is not lost as of now because Romero Games has announced that multiple publishers have approached the studio and are interested in helping the developer release their title. Romero Games is currently ‘evaluating those opportunities’.

The official statement by Romero Games was shared on X and we have linked it below:

We want to address recent reports regarding the status of Romero Games. These reports have contained inaccuracies, and we feel it’s important to set the record straight.

  • The funding for our project was pulled, and our game was canceled.
  • Due to confidentiality agreements, we cannot disclose the publisher’s identity, though some may infer it from public information.
  • As a result, we now have to reassess the entire staffing of our studio.
  • Romero Games is not closed, and we are doing everything in our power to ensure that it does not come to that. Any suggestion otherwise is factually incorrect. Indeed, we were in the studio today to discuss next steps with the team.
  • We’ve been contacted by several publishers interested in helping us bring the game across the finish line, and we’re currently evaluating those opportunities.

We appreciate the outpouring of support and will share further updates as we are able.

The latest Microsoft layoffs have hurt many developers who have been in the industry for decades. This includes Turn10 Studios, the developer of Forza Motorsport, as well as a franchise that has been part of Xbox since the very first Xbox console. With over 50% of its staff gone, the studio is now nothing but a support developer for its Forza Horizon franchise. Another major hit was the Perfect Dark Reboot which was a major hit at the Xbox Games Showcase just last year. Other shuttered projects include Everwild, ZeniMax’s upcoming brand-new IP, and many other unannounced projects. According to reports, Microsoft has laid off 4% of its global workforce.
