Beginner’s Guide – Marvel Rivals
Read on below to learn more about different heroes found in the game, how you can pick the best one for your playstyle, understand different in-game roles, be a good team player, and more.
Understanding the Basics of Gameplay
While it may look like a typical shooter and the characters are just different skins of the same base character, it is not the case. Marvel Rivals is a Hero Shooter which means that each character in the game is unique and when you are playing with them, you will need to rely on their unique strengths and weaknesses to stay ahead of the game. Each Hero in the game is different from each other and while you may be tempted to play with all of them, at one time, you will only be good with some of them because of this and hence it is important that you stick with a few Heroes and master them instead of trying to be good at the same time.
Figure Out Your Preferred Role Quickly
After you understand the basics of the game and how different Heroes work in the game, you should start working towards understanding the different roles. Each Hero falls into three separate roles in the game. These include Strategist, Duelist, and Vanguard. Each of these roles is designed for players to support their team. Not every role will support others in the same, but every role’s main goal is to support other players whether it is by taking down other players, healing the party or creating defensive barriers around their team but each team has to work together no matter what the role for each player is.
The Vanguard role is basically the tank role in the game. These Heroes are big and they can take a lot of punishment before they die. These players need to be on the front, absorb as much damage as they can, and support the others to perform their roles. As the opposition will focus on these Vanguards, the rest of the team can push forward and also support the Vanguard by healing them. This makes the Vanguard role an important one and basically, if you pick this role, you will need to lead your team in the battle. Their abilities revolve around healing themselves for taking even more punishment and sometimes supporting their team with different buffs to allow them to fight while you take on the punishment.
Evident from the name, the Strategist or Support role features Heroes who must work to support their team. These Heroes have abilities that are primarily designed to help their team in various ways. These Heroes can heal their teammates, teleport them around the map, or create barriers around the team. Each Hero has unique Support skills that are aimed at supporting the other players on the team. If you select a Strategist, you must play the role and focus on your team’s current status and assist in any way possible using your skills and abilities.
Finally, you have the Duelist role or in simpler words, the DPS role whose main goal is to deal as much damage to enemies as possible while the tanks take all the damage, and the Support class heals and aids in various ways. Their abilities are focused on dealing with the maximum damage and helping you out in solo gameplay and fights. Naturally, it will make sense to stick close to your team and take out enemies but if you are caught out in the open, you can deal some serious damage on your own as well.
While the Heroes fall into these three separate roles, certain Heroes fit into different roles as well. For example, Venom can take a lot of punishment but also deal a lot of damage with its powerful abilities at the same time as well. There are many other Heroes that can fit into multiple roles as well and if you are good with the gameplay, you can adopt two different roles based on your own skill level as well. Always pick a Hero that suits your gameplay style and then adapt further once you have the grips with its base role.
Pick Heroes That Can Form Synergies
While it may be tempting to just pick your favorite Hero and jump into the game, sometimes it will play off well if you decide to pick a Hero that can form a synergy with any other Hero currently in your team. Different Heroes in Marvel Rivals can form synergies that unlock a bonus Active Ability for them in the game. Normally, these are characters that come from the same franchise and have worked together in comics or movies. Probably the most iconic duo is Groot and Rocket Raccoon where Rocket can ride on Groot’s shoulders, and this grants a damage reduction buff to Rocket.
Similarly, many other Heroes can form synergies with each other for different buffs during games. Depending on the synergy, some will be exceptionally good while some will be just okay so this is a decision that you need to make before you and your team select Heroes for a game.
Use The Practice Range to Understand Each Hero
Finding the Heroes that you feel comfortable with is important in the game so you should spend some time in the Practice Range with each Hero to understand them. Each Hero will have different movements, abilities, skills, and weapons so make sure that you are spending enough time with each Hero in the Practice Range to understand them properly. This will help you find a Hero that fits your playstyle perfectly.
Each Hero has unique Passive and Active abilities that you will use during matches. You do not need to activate Passive abilities, and they will keep providing you with different bonuses and buffs during the game but for Active Abilities, you will need precise timing and a good strategy to use them effectively. Practice their use in the Practice Range so that you are comfortable with how to use these Active Abilities in actual matches and maximize their effectiveness. Some of the Heroes are melee heroes while some are ranged. Some shoot using weapons and some shoot in different ways like Iron Man who shoots from his suit’s palms. Understanding these mechanics and getting used to them is vital for survival.
It may be the case that you might be a fan of Spider-Man, but you are not settling with them in the game. This is where the Practice Range comes in handy. Try out your favorite Heroes and then find out which Hero’s playstyle also fits with your gameplay style. This will help you find the Heroes that you are most comfortable with and win games. Once you are satisfied with the Practice Range, move to the main game and try to use what you have learned in actual combat scenarios, and you will see visible results.
Learning the Game Modes
Marvel Rivals comes with three different game modes where you must know what you need to do to win. The three game modes in Marvel Rivals include Convoy, Domination, and Convergence. Each game mode has different requirements for you to win so you should know what needs to be done in each of them. Starting with Domination, it is the classic King of the Hill mode where your team or the rival team must secure a specific location and keep it safe from the opposing team. Killing enemy players and holding down the spot will increase your points to 100 and if your rivals secure it, they will start moving towards 100. It is pretty straightforward.
Next up, we have Convoy. If you played Overwatch, this is the equivalent of Payload. You have to secure a moving vehicle and escort it through the map to another location. Your team must remain on the vehicle to keep it moving and if the enemy team moves on it, it will stop moving. To win, you must reach the destination. Finally, you have Convergence which is a mixture of the two game modes. You will first secure a location and then escort a payload through the map to another location. Each game mode is unique and you must follow the objectives to win.
Save Your Ultimate Ability for the Right Time
While it may be tempting to use your Hero’s Ultimate Ability as soon as it is charged, you must wait for the right time to use it. Each Hero has a unique Ultimate Ability and not all Ultimate Abilities are for dealing damage. Some Heroes’ Ultimate Abilities are aimed at dealing massive damage to enemy heroes, but some will revive dead allies, heal your entire team, or even get kills inside an enemy group. Your Ultimate will regenerate as you deal damage to your enemies or heal yourself and once it is full, you can unleash it, but you must wait for the right time and then use it to maximize its effect.
Understand Your Objectives in Each Game
Marvel Rivals may have shooting but simply shooting rival players will not net you the win. Each game in Marvel Rivals has a specific objective that each team needs to achieve to win. Depending on the game mode that you select, you will need to capture areas and hold them, securing payload items and moving them back to your base and many different objectives. You and your team must focus on these objectives as well because they will net you the win. Simply killing other players will not do much good for your team because if your rival team is focusing on objectives and your team is focusing on only killing others, your team will not win the game. Always try to complete objectives while taking out rival Heroes in the mix.
Learn the Maps
No matter how you become at shooting and killing your enemies, you cannot win unless you start learning the ins and outs of maps. Each map in the game is unique and some hidden aspects will help you massively during different scenarios in the game. Each map has different locations which can only be accessed by specific Heroes such as Iron Man or any others that can fly. These Heroes can use these areas to hang back, restore their health, or evade chasing enemies. Similarly, each map has different Health-restoring pads as well scattered in random locations. You can learn a map and know where these are located which will greatly increase your strategic knowledge of each map.
Specific buildings in maps can also be broken down and this will open new opportunities for combat such as cover spots in open locations, or new secret paths that your opponents may be unaware of initially because you opened them. Use these locations, hidden routes, and other map elements to your advantage and you can only use them if you have a good knowledge about the map. Some of the maps also come with bounce pads which will allow you to jump high in the air and get to a more strategic location. Always use them if you need to. Practice and explore the maps in each game so that you can learn and use them in the future.
Be A Good Team Player
While it may be tempting for you to complete objectives and aim for the game’s win, sometimes it will pay off if you stick with your team and help them instead. If you go out solo and your team is fighting enemies, you should stick back and help them out instead. Going solo may work in that particular scenario but if your team is wiped out, you will end up with nothing as well. Always support your teammates wherever you can by using your abilities and skills. It is after all a team-based Hero shooter and each Hero is designed to help the team in different ways. Perform your role properly and be active with your team. Good communication always leads to a victory or at least some kills.
