Survival Guide – Green Hell

Our Green Hell Survival Guide details everything that you need to know about survival in Green Hell.

Keep an Eye on Your Thirst and Hunger

Before anything else comes into play, your own body requirements take the upmost priority in Green Hell. There are two main aspects here that you must be aware of all times. Your thirst and hunger because you will not be able to do anything else properly if you are thirsty or hungry in the game. Instead of giving a UI and ruining the gameplay, the game has a pretty neat feature and all the basic needs are available for you in your trusty watch on your left hand.

Simply look at your watch and it will show you your basic needs including your hunger and thirst. For your hunger, the meter is split into three separate sections which include carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. If your body requires something, its bar will be pretty low and if you do not take care of that specific need quickly, it will drain completely and you will start losing health which is something you cannot afford in Green Hell.

Starting with your hunger, you have to intake a balanced diet of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. Each type of requirement has its own unique food sources however some food sources will also fulfill more than 1 type of requirement. The most common source for fats is nuts and carbohydrates is bananas. For proteins, you will need to a little bit of work. You will need to hunt for animals and then cook their meat to get the best form of proteins.

If you are extremely low on proteins and want some quick ones, try to find dead animals in the forest and pick up larvae and maggots and eat them from them. This will give you the required nutrients but will adversely affect your mental health or as the game calls it Sanity. It is explained further down in the guide. Make sure that you try to eat as healthy as possible because good food will ensure that you stay on top of your health.

The second aspect is your thirst. Your thirst is quenched by finding and drinking water. Since you are in a jungle so clean water is not always available to you. You will mostly need to improvise and drink water that is not always very good for you. You have access to dirty, unsafe and clean water in the game but the most commonly found waters in the game include dirty and unsafe water. You will find the water sources marked on your map however not all of them offer drinking water. The only source of clean water is boiling unclean and dirty water. Dirty water will give you different types of diseases and you must avoid drinking it unless you are extremely thirsty.

You can use water bidons to collect and save clean different water with you and since you will need to drink water often, it is important that you keep a good supply of water with you at all times. If you find some fruit, eat them and they will refill your thirst meter a little bit as well however you cannot always count of them for water. If you find some coconuts, eat them right away because they are a vital source of water in the game.

One last thing that you must know is that the food you carry with you will spoil overtime hence it is important that you do not keep excess food with you. Cook food according to your need and only keep a small amount of food with you at all times. The food will expire after some times and if you eat expired food, it will give you food poisoning and make the game even worse for you.

Keep Your Sanity High

An important mechanic to look out for in Green Hell is your sanity meter. Surviving in an Amazon jungle all alone is not easy at all and part from your physical condition, it will also affect your mental condition. So simply put, sanity represents your mental condition in Green Hell. Just like your hunger and thirst, you must be aware of your sanity at all times and if it gets too, you will not be able to continue your regular tasks in the game.

Sanity is the small white head with a brain symbol in the lower-left corner of the screen and you can easily keep track of it. It should remain as full as possible otherwise you will start hallucinating and eventually lose your mind completely. There are different methods that will help you keep your sanity meter high. These include eating cooked food, staying in your camp near the fire especially at night and keeping away from bad food such as dirty water and worms.

Things that will reduce your sanity include eating worms and larvae, dirty water, straying too far away from your camp especially at night, sleeping on dirty floor and not in your comfy amazon bed and even diseases. You cannot expect to survive for a long time if you don’t look after your sanity just like you look after your food and thirst requirements.

Avoid Getting Diseases and Heal Your Wounds

You will eventually end up with some sort of a disease in Green Hell because it is impossible to avoid them. You must be able to identify and heal each type of disease in Green Hell and luck for you, we have not yet found a disease in the game which cannot be healed. So far, we have been able to cure all the diseases found in the game. If you see a disease icon on top of your health bar, you must inspect your body to see what sort of disease or problem your body is suffering from. The game treats wound in the same category of a disease so you must first identify it.

You can suffer from the following diseases or wounds in Green Hell. We have also detailed how you can get rid of them below as well.

  • Food Poisoning – Caused by eating rotten food and dirty water. Can be cured by eating Water Lily Flower.
  • Leeches – The most common problem in the Amazon Jungle. Inspect your body and remove them from your body while you are at it.
  • Open Wounds – Open wounds are caused by different sources such as predator bites, enemy hits or even falling down from high places. They must be cured with bandages.
  • Parasites – Stomach Parasites are caused by drinking dirty water and you must find a specific mushroom to fix it. We don’t know the name of the mushroom however it is orange in color and you can find it growing on the trees commonly. It is also pretty small. If your nutrients start decreasing very quickly, it means that you have parasites in your stomach.
  • Poisonous Bites – Snakes and Spiders roam the amazon forest and they will often bite you. Among all of the diseases, these bites are the most dangerous and if not healed, your character will eventually die. It can be cured using the same orange mushroom which cures the stomach parasites.
  • Insect Bites – Insect bites will cause rashes however they do not require any sort of treatment from your side because they only reduce your mental level. They do not affect you physically. After some time, they will go away but you must try to avoid beehives and anthills.
  • Skin Worms – Skin worms are caused by sleeping on the ground and you will need a bone needle to get rid of them. Once the worm is removed, use a bandage or it might give you an infection.

General Tips and Tricks

  • Always inspect your body because you never know what your body might be suffering from. The best way to know when to inspect your body is when a magnifying glass appears at the top of your health bar. It would mean that something is wrong with your body and you must get rid of that as quickly as possible.
  • You must always keep some bandages with you at all times. You never know what you might encounter in the amazon jungle and not everything you see will be a friendly site. The forest is full of dangers and even if they are not moving, they might hurt you in one way or the other. To counter this, always keep some bandages with you.
  • You only have limited inventory space. Do not burden yourself with junk. Food spoils after sometime so make sure that you only cook enough that is required by you in the near future. In addition, do not gather crafting materials that are just no use to you. The best strategy is to focus on a single crafting item and collect materials required for it before looking out for more resources and crafting materials.
  • You must know your way around the jungle. There are no signposts in the jungle that would tell you where your camp is so you must have a good understanding of your surroundings. If you wander too far off from your camp, you will get lost and will probably be eaten by a predator so make sure that you keep a good track of where are you going at all times. The environment is full of things that you can use as marks for this very purpose.
  • Try to make a shelter as quickly as possible because it will give you a safe spot to pass your time, cook your meals and sleep at night. At the start of the game, don’t opt for the fancy ones and simply create the basic one which will give you a starting location for further developments and advancements.
